The Flores Flyer
February 15, 2019 Volume 1, Issue 6
Dear parents,
Recently, I had the pleasure of attending an awards dinner that honors grant recipients in Newport-Mesa, along with naming the Teacher of the Year at individual schools and across the district. Davis Magnet School always has a strong representation and this year did not disappoint. Davis teachers received $10,499 towards technology, books, flexible seating, and materials for gardening, math, and social/emotional learning.
Additionally, for the first time ever, a Davis Magnet School teacher was named the NMUSD Elementary Teacher of the Year. Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Ramos, was awarded this incredible honor and distinction. Her positive classroom culture creates the tone for the high academic standards that she sets for all of her students. Her ability to differentiate and support students with a wide variety of abilities and behaviors is impressive. Ms. Ramos is a lifelong learner and gives back to the profession by serving on many committees and mentoring beginning teachers. CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to Ms. Ramos for your service to our students!
Our campus is full of hard-working and dedicated staff members. Not only do our teachers do an amazing job at differentiating and meeting students’ academic needs, but they mentor students with their behaviors, and social/emotional needs. Teaching is a challenging profession as it is, but many of the Davis teachers invest their time and efforts by offering students opportunities in PALS, robotics, Eco Club, music, theater, and athletics to name a few.
Rita Pierson perfectly stated, “Every child deserves a champion; an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be.” Thankfully, Davis Magnet School is full of child champions.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Flores

The Power of Yet: Developing our Growth Mindset - Written by Mrs. Dowdy, 3rd Grade Teacher and PBIS Team Member
This month’s Growth Mindset focus is on “Grit”.
This month’s growth mindset is on grit. Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth says it best when she says,"Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day-in, day-out. Not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years. And working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint."- Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth

Spotlight on 3rd Grade!
Each month we will shine a special spotlight on one grade level at Davis Magnet School. This month 3rd grade teachers, Mrs. Dowdy, Mrs. Gordon, and Mrs. Ross share some of the wonderful things the 3rd grade students are doing.
Third grade LOVES going on field trips. We’ve gone on two field trips so far this year, both related to our Social Studies standards. At the Environmental Nature Center we learned about the Native American tribe that lived here in Orange County. We got to have hands-on experiences with games that Native Americans played and tools they used in their daily lives. Our second trip was to the historic Santa Ana Courthouse which was the site of the Orange County government since the late 1800’s.
Third grade has also been busy learning fundamental math skills such as our multiplication and division math facts, learning about fractions and equivalent fractions, and finally learning key strategies to attack word problems.
Subject rotations are also happening in 3rd grade. Twice a week we rotate to other classes for social studies, science, and engineering. It’s very beneficial for the students to work with a variety of teachers and for the teachers to get to know more than just their homeroom kids. We consider 3rd grade a village and it takes teamwork to be the best 3rd grade we can be.

Nutrition Nuggets - "The Power of Physical Activity" By Kim Robins
Why is regular physical activity so important?
- The human body was designed for activity. This includes moderate exercise such as walking the dog, raking leaves or playing tag with the kids.
- Exercise increases bone strength so that your bones are not brittle or weak.
- It increases metabolism to help control your weight.
- Moving your body through full ranges of motion helps keep it flexible.
- Exercise can lead to new friends. Check the community centers or local health clubs for special exercise groups and ask your friends to join you.
- Being active is good for your mind. It tackles anxiety and depression by improving your mood and lifting your self-esteem.
7. Physical activity enhances your immune system. It decreases the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. Staying active decreases cholesterol levels and controls or can help prevent diabetes. If you want to sleep soundly at night and help reduce your risk of premature death, give exercise a try. Start slow and increase your activity as your fitness grows.
Everyone has the flexibility to select various activities that he or she will truly enjoy. It could be dancing, martial arts, tennis, paddle boarding, swimming, lifting weights, running, or walking. If you select a time to get active, it will help to encourage you to stick with it. Help yourself and your family to live well by getting physically active every day.
