Stoller Weekly
August 24th, 2018
Hello Stoller Families!
Welcome back to an exciting school year. I know that many of you received a letter from me soon after I was named Stoller principal. I have gotten to know the community, some parents, and our amazing teachers. I am looking forward to this school year. I do want to take this opportunity to introduce our two new assistant principals – Thao Do Gwillam and Shawn Swick.
Mrs. Gwilliam comes from Highland Park middle school where she was the assistant principal. Mr. Swick comes from International School of Beaverton where he served as their high school counselor. The three of us look forward to meeting Stoller students and families.
6th Grade Parents
Incoming 6th graders! What an exciting time for our new middle school students. Transitioning from elementary school to middle school is an important milestone. I want to assure you that your students will have the support and guidance they need to have a successful first year of middle school. All 6th graders will start on Monday, August 27th. Students can come early at 8:30 if they are eating breakfast at school. Students are allowed in the halls at 9:05 and classes start at 9:15. Please say goodbye to them at the front door as parents will not be allowed to go into the building for safety reasons. There will be time to meet with teachers during back to school night and throughout the school year. Teachers and staff look forward to meeting our new 6th graders.
7th and 8th grade parents
Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer with your students. The first day for 7th and 8th graders is Tuesday, August 28th. As with the 6th graders, you will be asked to say goodbye at the entrance for safety reasons. There will other opportunities to meet with teachers.

Technology Use During School Hours
Just a reminder that Stoller is an “off and away” school. This means students will be allowed to bring their phones to school, however during school hours they are to keep them off and put them away in a safe place. This decreases distractions and ensures that students are fully engaged throughout the day. If students need to call home, they will always have access to a phone in the health room or main office. We appreciate your support with this, as this is an area where sometimes students need clear expectations.
Continuing with the technology topic, here is a link to a great article on screen time and teenagers. We hope you find this article informative and relevant as a parent, especially with technology being present in every part of our lives.
Picture Day is Coming!
Plan your "Safe Route to School!"
As we all know, traffic in and around our school is chaotic at arrival and dismissal times. The roads and school parking lots cannot handle the volume of cars typically dropping off and picking up students. The majority of BSD students are in the walk/bike zone or are offered bus service to their school. PLEASE spend some time before school starts finding a safe walk or bike route to school or your bus stop. Here are the school’s walk zone maps and suggested routes.
Check out BSD's flyer for tips on being a responsible road user, whatever travel mode you choose. Safety is everyone’s responsibility: keep your eyes open, look out for each other and help everyone arrive to school safely. You can help make the route to school safe for everyone.
Chromebooks are coming...
- Chromebooks will be distributed the first week of school as follows: 8th grade will receive Chromebooks on Tuesday, 7th grade will receive Chromebooks on Wednesday, and 6th grade will receive Chromebooks on Thursday.
- VERY IMPORTANT: Please make sure that you have filled out the Chromebook Damage/Loss Form and paid your $20 Insurance Fee. Please return completed forms and fees to the front office.
- Chromebooks are part of school provided supplies. We will go over rules and expectations to ensure they are being used responsibly and as a tool for learning.
- In an effort to decrease opportunities for risk of damage to our Chromebooks and avoid Chromebooks being used in a manner that is not consistent with district policy, we will ask that students use them only during class time when directed by their teachers.
- Students will be allowed to take their Chromebooks home. We ask that you remind your student to charge them every night and handle them with care.
