Islam as a religion was established by Muhammad, a member of the Arabic Quraish tribe from the West Central part of the Arabian Peninsula in Mecca. Mohammed lived from 570 A.D. to 632 A.D. One day Muhammed recieved a revelation form the angel Gabriel in 610 A.D. The reason he recieved this was to be a prophet to the Arabic people to promote monotheism and a belief in Allah, the God in Islam.

People who live in countries in the Middle East or North Africa, nearly two-thirds (62%) of Islams live in the Asia-Pacific region. There are about 1.6 billion Islams (23%) of the world's population, making Islam the second largest religion.
