Elyria High School
It's a Great Day to be a Pioneer
December 2020
While the school district continues to operate under the guidance of the Lorain County Public Health Department, we received an early gift when our Superintendent announced winter athletic competitions and club sponsored activities could safely resume beginning on Monday, December 14th. Please remember the athletic department will be video streaming our home boys and girls basketball games, as well as our wrestling matches throughout the season and the updated schedules can be found on the Elyria Athletics Website. Let's Go Pioneers!!!
Since the district will remain in a virtual learning model for the remainder of the 1st semester (ends on Jan. 22nd), the majority of teachers have redesigned the typical mid-term exam for their courses. The next section of the newsletter will provide more in-depth details for students and families to learn about the exam changes in their respective courses.
If you wish to change your student's learning plan (in-person or virtual), the district has created a short online form for you to indicate your 2nd semester preference. The submissions are due by Monday, Dec. 21st and here's the link (https://www.smore.com/43hfp) to the district's "Learning at Home" Dec. 10th issue where you can access the change form.
Thank you again for your continued support through all of the unique circumstances we've experienced and please remember we're only a phone call or email away should you need anything. May you have a blessed holiday season and continue to stay safe & healthy.

1st Semester Exams (Midterms)
The majority of our teachers have decided to establish a project based assessment to measure their students' content knowledge replacing the traditional midterm exam. While some courses will still administer an appropriate exam, this decision will hopefully reduce the stress level many students experience preparing for midterm exams. If an exam is given, it will be administered virtually within the normal class period during the student's given cohort instructional days (Cohort A - Jan. 19th and 20th; Cohort B - Jan. 21st and 22nd).
All high school teachers will announce their semester project/exam in their Google classroom and the building will post a comprehensive list by content area by the end of this week. The comprehensive list will be posted under the announcement section of the high school's webpage.
It's also important for students to remember their first and second quarter grades and semester project/midterm factor into earning a semester credit. The procedures used for determining grade averages can be found in the student packet by clicking on the following link: https://www.elyriaschools.org/domain/222.
Here's a quick brain teaser to help you prepare. How many of the individuals can you name pictured below? All five were staff members @ EHS when the Class of 2021 were freshmen. There's an Elyria pink cookie waiting for the first student to correctly identify all five and email Ms. Stiteler at stitelerpatricia@elyriaschools.org.
Preparing for 2nd semester
Following this current daily schedule also provides the safest physical environment should conditions improve that we can provide in-person instruction four days per week. Although the number of students in an assigned classroom would range between 10-15 by combining A&B cohorts, we would still maintain all of the other health and safety measures implemented since the beginning of the school year.
While the four-day plan helps maximize the direct instructional support and guidance our students would receive in most of their courses, it does create a manageable dilemma with any off-day cohort courses a student may be taking. An example of this dilemma is our world language courses (Spanish and French) and the JROTC program. To ensure students enrolled in these additional courses continue with their learning, an additional class period will be added to the building's daily schedule.
We will include a sample schedule of any changes to the master schedule in the January newsletter as we get closer to the possibility of a four-day instructional model. If you have additional questions regarding a student schedule, please don't hesitate to contact the school.
The Remarkable Student Council of Elyria High School
What would the first weekend in December be without the annual EHS Student Council Santa's Workshop for the children of Elyria? Unfortunately, the pandemic's surge caused us to cancel this year's Santa Workshop adding to a list of disappointing announcements that have prevented our students and families from experiencing some amazing events.
The 2020-21 Elyria High School Student Council led by Parker Skutt - President; Malia Abbott - Vice President; Camden Burgess - Secretary; Kyla Koos - Treasurer; and EHS Advisor, Tina Biltz refused to allow these cancelations to get in the way of them doing amazing things for the children of Elyria. The student membership voted to donate the $2000 that would have been spent on purchasing various crafts, treats and refreshments for children and families attending Santa's Workshop and Trunk or Treat events to four local charitable causes.
- $500 donation to the Salvation Army Canned Food Drive
- $500 donation to the Chronicle Telegram's Not Forgotten Box
- $500 donation to the Save Our Children's Sponsor a Child Program, and
- $500 donation to Wigs for Kids in the name of a district family
In the true spirit of the holiday season, the EHS Student Council's generosity doesn't stop there. They are also creating and writing holiday cards for the residents of the Wesleyan Village and Abbywood, as well as coordinating a virtual holiday story time with elementary classroom teachers.
Pictured below are student members of the EHS Student Council, NHS and Key Club organizations that volunteered to be Elves in the City of Elyria's Festival of Lights.
Happy Holidays!!!
