A note from the Principal

Dear Parents & Caregivers

Emotions Matter

Over the last few newsletters, we have spoken about emotions, why they matter and how the Mood Meter can be used to support students in understanding and articulating their emotions. Emotions drive our learning, decision-making, creativity, relationships, and health, so it is important that we develop the skills and strategies to support us in managing these positively. If you have not yet done so, I recommend downloading a Mood Meter off our school website and start using it in your home to support your children in better recognising (R), understanding (U) and labelling (L) their emotions.

Another tool we use to support us in expressing (E) and regulating (R) our emotions is the Meta Moment. A key element in the Meta Moment is understanding your best self or being able to identify times when you have been your best self and responded to situations in ways you have been proud of. Essentially, the Meta-Moment is a brief step back from the situation when we pause and think before acting. We ask ourselves, “How would my 'best self' react in this situation?

As a staff we have been working through the RULER training and reflecting on those situations and occurrences that trigger undesired emotions in us. By reflecting on our triggers, we are better placed to sense, pause and act as our best self the next time we experience those undesired emotions. Ultimately, acting as our best self will help us to build relationships rather than break them.

For more information, please watch the Meta Moment video that features on our school Website under the RULER tab.

In the next newsletter, we will explore The Charter and how it can support you (and your family) in identifying the types of emotions you want to feel more of and how you can go about achieving them.

Year 6 Confirmation

Congratulations to Clara Chantrell, Riley Charles, Nathan Mein-Colace, Sebastian Dimasi, Ruby Licciardello, Katie Vinci and Casey Wringe who all made their Confirmation last Sunday in the Church. These students have chosen to deepen their relationship with God, by drawing upon the gifts that He has given them through the Holy Spirit to support them in their faith journey. Thank you to Mr Skehan and Mrs Wright for their efforts in preparing our students and organising the Sacrament, and to those who supported in preparations and readings.

Low Fees Initiative

Great news! St Mary’s is again participating in Catholic Education’s Low Fees Initiative. An initiative that we have committed to for the next 10 years. Basically, for $300, enrolled students get their booklists, stationery, camp contribution and swimming lessons, among other things. For more information on our Low Fees Initiative including our fee structure, please visit our school website.

Loud Shirt Day

On Friday 21st October, our school will be supporting the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre’s Loud Shirt Day. On this day students may wear their "loudest" shirt for a gold coin donation. The money raised from this initiative will go towards the centre, supporting them to continue helping children with hearing loss across the state.

Playgroup Visit

On Monday 24th October at 3:30pm, Mrs Fiumano, Miss Moore and I will be presenting some information about our school and our early years learning program. For those interested in enrolling in Kindergarten next year, you can book your spot by responding to the Facebook post on the Donnybrook Playgroup’s Page.

Year 1-6 Swimming Lessons

As we come to the end of our swimming lessons, I would like to thank Mr Skehan for his efforts in organising the program, to the teachers for being flexible in their planning, to our EA’s who got in the pool, and to the parents for their efforts in managing the extra washing. It’s a big ask, I know, but swimming is an essential life skill that all students should learn. Congratulations to all our students on their achievements in the pool. Whether you passed or not, you have all benefited from the extra time in the pool.

Year 6 Camp

Next week, our Year 6 students are off to Camp at Woodman Point in Fremantle. Over the week, students will be engaged in activities that are fun and will challenge their physical, spiritual and mental capabilities, including rock climbing, raft making and orienteering. We wish our Year 6 students all the best for a successful camp and week away with their friends.

Socktober

This year for Catholic Missions Socktober, we will be hosting a Crazy Sock and Free Dress Day on Friday 28th October. On this day, students may wear free dress and their craziest socks for a gold coin donation. The money raised will go to the Socktober initiative which aims to raise funds and support for families facing malnutrition and food insecurity in Ethiopia.

All Saints Day

All Saints Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on the 1st November. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. On this day we will be reflecting on this occasion with a Liturgy at 10:50am in the Mulit-purpose room. Parents are welcome to join us.

2023 Student Leaders

On Tuesday 1st November at 1:30pm, our Year 5 student will be nominating and presenting their speeches to the school for Head, Vice and Sports Captain positions in 2023. Voting will occur soon after with the presentation occurring at the end of year Liturgy and awards night. Again, parents are welcome to attend.

RAK Week and Colour Run

This term, we will celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week during Week 4, culminating with Free Dress and a P&F organised Colour Fun Run of Friday 4th November (make sure you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on!) The P&F will be sending parents information about the Colour Fun Run shortly. Please speak to your children about how they can show kindness to themselves and those around them.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Our Interschool Athletics Carnival is booked for Thursday 3rd November at Hay Park in Bunbury. More information was sent home to parents this week. All student’s will be on Bus 2 unless they received a note highlighting that they are on Bus 1. Please contact the office if the notes didn’t make it home.

Playground Update

Great news! We are on track to start the new year with two new playgrounds. At this stage it looks like the lower oval playground will be completed before Christmas, with the early childhood area being completed the week before school returns. Again, thank you to Amcal Life Clinic, Donnybrook Bendigo Bank, the Donnybrook Chamber of Commerce for their financial contributions and support. A big thank you also to our anonymous donors, you know who you are!

P&F Meeting

Our next P&F Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 1st November at 9am. Please mark this in your calendar. All welcome.

P&F and SAC ACM

Our Parents and Friends and School Advisory Council Annual Community Meetings are planned for Tuesday 22nd November at 6pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. Please support those who support the school and make yourself available to attend.

Important Dates

Please mark in your calendars that Friday 25th November will be a Pupil Free Day. For further information on term dates please view the updated calendar on our school website.

Mini Marvels

This term, Miss Chelsea Moore will be coordinating our Mini Marvels 3-year-old program on Thursday mornings between 9-10:30am in the Kindy room. This program provides a great opportunity for our 2023 Kindergarten students and their families to meet each other and become comfortable with our space and our teachers. If you know of anyone with children looking to enrol in Kindy next year, please share this information with them and ask them to call the office on 97324700.

2023 Enrolments

We are currently taking 2023 enrolments across all year levels. If you know of anyone who may be interested in taking advantage of our low fees initiative and joining a thriving community, please have them contact us on 97324700 to book a school tour with the principal. Our Kindergarten positions are limited and filling up quickly so act now to secure your place.
