The Grand Forks Foundation for Education is awarding a $1,000 scholarship this summer to help a Grand Forks Public Schools educator in their pursuit of higher education.
Nicole Novak, a South Middle School teacher, is the recipient of this year’s UND Phi Delta Kappa Graduate Scholarship.
The Foundation for Education’s UND Phi Delta Kappa Graduate Scholarship supports educators who are pursuing graduate degrees in education at the University of North Dakota. This scholarship is intended to promote leadership potential, enhance leadership skills, and assist deserving graduate level students with the completion of master’s or specialist degrees in education. Phi Delta Kappa is an association of educators dedicated to high-quality education for all students. The association has served more than 500,000 educators in communities across the United States and abroad.

Grand Forks Public Schools has announced two administrative assignments for the 2019-2020 school year.
Brian Loe, currently the Dean of Students/Multicultural Coordinator/504 Coordinator at Challenger Elementary School in Thief River Falls, Minn., has been selected as the Associate Principal at South Middle School.
Loe had previously served as a social studies and world studies teacher for over 10 years. Loe has served on several district committees and administrative teams, as well as being involved in administrative decisions and processes.
Loe holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies from the University of North Dakota and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
The assignment is due to the retirement of Terry West, associate principal at South Middle School.
Angie Jonasson, currently the principal at West Elementary School, has been named the principal at Lake Agassiz Elementary School. She will be supported by Associate Principal Elisa Dietrich along with a to-be-named full-time Title I Coordinator.
Diederich will be assigned to West Elementary as a principal designee for 60 percent of her time with the remaining 40 percent at Lake Agassiz Elementary. She will be mentored by Jonasson.
“Grand Forks Public Schools has used a similar model in the past to allocate an administrator at our smallest elementary schools,” said Jody Thompson, Associate Superintendent of Elementary Education. “This provides administrative and supervisory support for our students, families, and employees while also being fiscally responsible to our community.”
Red River High School marketing students have been using their business skills to learn about the sales process and use their knowledge to call on local businesses to sponsor the Grab Bag Program.
The program fills a need at the middle and high school levels similar to the backpack program at the elementary level. Through the program, students in need are able to visit with their school social worker, get a bag, and fill it with items they need.
This is the second year of the program.
Marketing students sold over $20,000 worth of cash and in-kind sponsorship levels. The students are using the money from sponsorships to purchase items for students identified as in need for the summer months. The leftover money will be used to purchase items for the upcoming school year. Students in need will be able to go to their counselor or social worker and grab what they need with no questions asked.
The following businesses are sponsors of the Grab Bag Program for this year:
Platinum ($1,500): Red Pepper, Braaten’s Auto, and Pro Transport.
Gold: ($1,000-$1,499): Stay & Play Pet Resort, Altru, Deek’s Pizza, and Fighting Sawks.
Silver: ($500-$999): United Valley Bank, Grand Forks Sertoma Club Sponsorship Fund, Eagle’s Crest Grill, Choice Bank, and the Grand Forks Convention and Visitors Bureau.
