You've had a conference... now what?!
After the conference:
- Follow up with the teacher. Check in on progress and let them know what you are working on at home. If there is something you forgot to discuss at the conference, follow up with a note or phone call. Keep the dialogue going.
- Talk to your child. Tell your child right away about the positive things the teachers discussed and then talk about their suggestions for improvement. Create process-oriented goals with your child if you want to create a plan to improve behavior or performance.
Process Oriented Goals
Most kids and adults tend to think in outcome-oriented ways (i.e. what grade you received on a test or whether you won or lost a game). While your child may work incredibly hard, they still may not achieve the score they were hoping for on a reading assessment. Children who are more focused on the outcome than the process tend to display less task persistence (they give up sooner), less task enjoyment, more low-ability attributions (felt badly about themselves when they didn’t get it correct), and worse task performance. Children who focus on the process are more persistent, don’t beat themselves up if they make a mistake, and ultimately perform better.
Examples of Process Oriented Goals include:
- Read 20 minutes per night rather than read 3 books each month
- Practice 5 one-minute math fact worksheets per night instead of complete the sheet in less than one minute
- Practice spelling words on car rides instead of getting 100% on the spelling test
Share your process goals with your teacher in an email, they might have additional process goal suggestions depending on what your child’s needs are academically. Make a fun process goal chart to ensure your child sticks with them. If you want to implement a reward system, reward the process instead of the outcome.
Parent teacher conferences are a great opportunity for parents and teachers to connect over shared goals and they’re a great reminder for all of us that together we can do so much!

Literacy Coach Update with Mrs. Reynolds
The third graders have been working hard these past few weeks using compare and contrast. After reading two to three stories on a common topic, they have been working on looking back in the text to find key details that make the stories similar or different to each other. They have been practicing this skill with different genres (fiction, non fiction, historical fiction to name a few). We've also been challenging the students to very specific when picking out and writing their key details.
In small groups, students have been working on several phonemic awareness activities. Depending on their specific need, we are working with listening and saying all of the sounds we hear in a given word. A couple of groups are working on fluency by practicing how many words or how many times they can read a given passage in a timed setting.
EL News with Mrs. Zeig
During our small group time, the students and I have been working hard to build positive relationships and establish our amazing, culturally diverse community. Students continue to participate in oral language development with Social Emotional check-ins, structured conversation, and the MONDO Let's Talk About It program. Students are also practicing foundational reading skills and academic vocabulary in context using McGraw Hill ELL supplemental resources, which align with the grade level lessons and standards. Students have recently gotten access to Imagine Language & Literacy (IL), an adaptive learning tool that accelerates reading and language proficiency. IL provides targeted instruction to each student through personalized learning paths in all four domains of literacy – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. We will soon begin preparing for the WIDA ACCESS (English Language Proficiency Assessment) that will be coming up in February and March.

Birthday Celebration Reminder
All teachers and staff at Havel support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated! While there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s birthday in school, birthday celebrations at Havel will not include food treats or items delivered to the school. As adults, we will certainly acknowledge children who are celebrating a birthday in the same way as usual (for example: a crown, a sticker, a visit to the Principal). Some possibilities for recognizing the day in a variety of special ways that do not include food treats include:
· Class sings “Happy Birthday”
· Happy Birthday Recess gift to class from child
· Morning “Happy Birthday” PA announcement
· Parent makes a donation of book to class library/read to class
· Student reads favorite book to class
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom. As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important events and achievements.
Covid Exposures & Quarantining Process
Critical to our keeping kids in school is knowing when to keep your student at home. Whether you’ve been exposed to COVID or not, anyone who is sick should stay home. Whether it is COVID, the flu, or other ailments, if you have more than one of the minor symptoms (headache, runny nose, fever, etc.) or ANY of the major symptoms (including cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or loss of taste or smell, your student MUST stay home. That and following Macomb County Dept. of Health Mitigation Strategies will help keep our students safe, well and in school!
REPORT CARDS COMING IN NOVEMBER THROUGH POWERSCHOOL ACCOUNTS
During November, Havel will distribute reports cards electronically. The first marking period grades will be sent electronically to families around mid-November after parent teacher conferences.
To receive the report cards, parents will need to have a secure PowerSchool account. Parents who do not have access to a PowerSchool account will need to register for one prior to Friday, October 29th. The report cards will then be automatically e-mailed to the address that is used to register the PowerSchool account. If you already have a PowerSchool account, you do not need to take any further action. The report card automatically will be sent to you electronically.
