July 16, 2020 - Caution about using the district email server
Hello All,
There have been several reminders that the emails using “reply to all” to the NVEA Update were viewable by everyone in the district including: site administration, district level managers, directors, assistant superintendents and the superintendent. The “reply to all” feature is still being used by NVEA members. The reality of using the NVUSD email server is that any and all emails are public record. The contents of this email chain if requested by a member of the public will have to be provided. In March of 2017, the California Supreme Court issued a ruling regarding the California Public Records Act (“CPRA”) (Govt. Code §6250 et seq.) and held that writings of a public employee, even if using a personal account are subject to CPRA. Therefore, it may be in your best interest to refrain from using the NVUSD email server and especially that email chain to voice your concerns. A member of the public is allowed to request this email chain and what you have written may be used out of context and paint a negative impression of you as a teacher.
It is clear that there are members who would like a place to respond to each other. We would like you to have a safe place to do so. To protect our members, we clearly need and want a place to talk. We are currently looking at that option and will launch as soon as possible.
For the protection of your public image, please be aware of what you are saying when using the NVUSD server.
