The students have been working hard on learning to sound out 3 or 4 letter or CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. This activity helps then to hear and use the short vowel sounds more consistently. Also the students have another strategy to use when reading an unfamiliar book. I am very proud of how they are doing with this! This is also something you could practice at home, in the car, anywhere! "How many words can we think of and spell that rhyme with cat?", for example.

Our seeds have sprouted! The children are so excited to see their plant growing. This week we will discuss the different parts of a plant and their role in helping the plant to grow and survive.

I am so proud of the writers the students have become. They are doing well adding describing words and more detail to their writing. They enjoy sharing the books that they write with each other. Below is the beginning of a book about Star Wars. I encourage the students to keep a journal over the summer. They can revisit all the fun things they do over the summer as well as practice their writing!

During math time this week, we have be concentrating on our number writing. The students are reminded to take their time and pay attention to make sure there are no backwards numbers (reversals at this age are still common). They did a nice job of slowing down and using good work habits!

Today we had another STEM challenge! The students were asked to show two parts of a plant's life cycle, the seed and the flower. The challenge was to make them pop out. The children did this by making springs. They had fun and did well creating, problem solving and sharing. We look forward to our maker and STEM times!
