“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.” Dr. Maria Montessori

We all have a story to tell. I am sure your children have come home with lots of stories and images of their new school year. These 3 days have been a wonderful beginning to the school year. Even our youngest and newest students have shown such high levels of independence and motivation to engage with the Montessori materials and the rituals of the classroom. New friendships are blossoming and old friendships have expanded. The established rhythm of our days has brought a sense of comfort. The Joy of Childhood abounds as each child writes a new story in their book of life.

I watched Mr. Trent's class this morning present the Montessori lesson of the "Long Black Strip". The students gathered on the sidewalk and listened intently to the story as the roll of black fabric demonstrated the history of our universe. As time was stretched out along 49th street, the children patiently waited to discover the sliver of red that formed the edge of the fabric. It represents the history of humanity, a wee band of red on a long strip of darkness. Mr. Trent concluded the lesson; "You are a part of this strip of red". The children paused with the silence. "What will be your story?"

Peace,

Ms. Tanya

Device Distribution

**Update 8/5/22: It is imperative that a parent/guardian fill out the necessary forms listed below on PowerSchool ASAP. Per SCCPSS directive, we cannot issue a device to your student until we have this paperwork on file.** Assessment windows are now open and we need to get devices to students as soon as possible. This is also important in case there is a quarantine situation that arises. Thank you for your prompt response to this request.**

Primary (PreK/K)
students will be receiving iPads and Lower El-Erdkinder (1st-8th Grades) will be receiving Chromebooks to use in the classroom/at home this year.

In order to receive a device, a parent/guardian must fill out the following forms through the PowerSchool Parent Portal:

  • Student Device Loan Form (under "Forms" on left hand menu)
  • Family Protection Plan (FPP) (under "Forms" on left hand menu)

The district is offering a Family Protection Plan (FPP) for the devices this year for only $25. The FPP will cover accidental damage (not loss or theft) of the device and provide up to TWO replacement devices this school year.

PLEASE NOTE: If the FPP is NOT purchased for $25, you will be responsible for any damage to the device, so we HIGHLY recommend that you purchase the FPP for each student's device.

The FPP can be purchased through School Cash Online. You will find instructions on how to register for School Cash Online and connect your student(s) to your account here.

If your family is in need of a HotSpot device, contact Ms. Lisa (lisa.odonnell@sccpss.com) to see if you qualify.

Grace & Courtesy Emphasis

Throughout the school year, Ellis has a school-wide focus on certain positive character traits. Each teacher may choose to highlight these "Grace & Courtesy" emphases differently, but as a school we follow a general common curriculum.

From August 3rd to August 26th, our school-wide Grace & Courtesy emphasis is RESPONSIBILITY.

The language of identifying Responsibility from "The Self-Awakened Child" series by Jonathan Wolff

  • When I do what I say I am going to do, I am being responsible.
  • When I make a mistake and tell the truth about what I did, I am taking responsibility for what I do and say.
  • When I do something that helps everyone and hurts no one, I am acting responsibly.
  • When I tell the truth about my sad, scary or angry feelings and I ask someone to help me feel better, I am taking responsibility for me feelings.
