Theme and Plot Line

The Theme of this story is that we are not ready to accept death. This is shown in the story when Peyton is going to be hanged. He imagines that he He breaks free to escape the grim reality that he is going to have his life taken form on a rope suspended under a bridge.


Plot line: Peyton is a civilian in the civil war although he wants to fight for the Confederacy against the United Sates. A disguised Union soldier comes to Peytons home
