Mrs. Baker's Classroom
March 24, 2016
What is going on?
March 28- April 1
Math: We are beginning our fractions unit. Students will explain that the more fractional parts used to make a whole, the smaller the part; and the fewer the fractional parts, the larger the part. The students will partition objects into equal parts and name the parts (halves, fourths, and eighths) using words. Students will use concrete models to count fractional parts beyond one whole using words and recognize how many parts it takes to equal one whole.
Reading: We will analyze how words, images, graphics, and sounds work together in various forms to impact meaning. We will recognize different purposes of media (e.g., informational, entertainment), describe techniques used to create media messages, and identify various written conventions for using digital media (e.g., e-mail, website, video games).
Writing: After learning all about procedural writing in our reading studies last week, we will now get to write some of our own. When writing procedural texts there needs to be a list of materials needed, detailed steps, and transitional words. Soon we will be able to accurately teach others how to do something we are great at completing ourselves!
Science: Now that we have learned all about living things, we will study food chains and how energy moves between organisms.
Sight Words: bring, fast, help, every, hand, men, pull, take
Please continue to work with your child to read, write, and spell these words with consistency.
Calendar:
March 25- No School
Sommer Elementary is issuing a “20 for 20” reading challenge to our families during the month of March! Pledge to read with your children for twenty minutes a day, for twenty days this month. You can read to your child, your child can read to you, or you can read together -- you choose! Enjoy the time reading with your child during this challenge -- we know it will be worthwhile. Look for more information and a reading log in your child’s Thursday folder.
Dear Parents,
The STAAR assessments are right around the corner and we are ready! Our students and teachers have been working very hard throughout the school year, and now it is time for them to shine and show everyone what they know. Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
Tuesday, March 29– STAAR Grade 4 Writing & Grade 5 Math
Wednesday, March 30 – STAAR Grade 5 Reading
Monday, May 9 – STAAR Grades 3-4 Math
Tuesday, May 10 – STAAR Grades 3-4 Reading
Wednesday, May 11 – STAAR Grade 5 Science
In order to provide our students with the best opportunity for success and to maintain a secure testing environment, our campus will be closed to volunteers and visitors on these testing dates. Additionally, there will not be any before or after school activities on these dates, with the exception of YMCA after-school care. For all grade levels that do not have students testing, normal daily scheduled activities will be honored (including specials and recess). For all testing grade levels, it is essential that our students be well rested and ready for the day of testing. Be sure that they get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast so they will be ready to do their best. In addition, our cafeteria will be offering free breakfast on these 5 testing days. Also, please be aware that students testing will need to turn in cell phones or any electronic devices to the office where they will be secure until testing concludes.
If you have any questions, please call Tasha Briseño, Therese Wafford or Nancy Varljen at 512-704-0600.
As always, we appreciate your support in helping our students to be successful and shine!
Sincerely,
Tasha Briseño
