Stanley Olympics 2022

While some of Our Year 7/8 students are off at Winter Olympics camp, we offer a week long alternative programme for the students at school.

Monday saw the week kick off with the Stanley Olympics opening ceremony. Teams paraded their banners and chants with enthusiasm and gusto, a great way to start a week of fun filled activities and trips.

Teams participated in fun rotations like a STEM challenge to build the highest tower, EPRO8 Electronics challenge to build a Caveman Car and a group performance practice for our performance and prize giving on Thursday afternoon. Along with a fantastic Master Chef session at the College on Tuesday where they created mouth-watering Bacon and Basil Tortellini and a stunning Swiss Roll.

Check out next weeks newsletter for photos of the trip to Ninja Valley!

Te Aroha District Cross Country Results

Last Thursday, 55 of our athletes went on to represent Stanley Avenue at the District Cross Country held at Manawaru School. Bad weather was threatening so the day began at the early time of 10am. Our boys and girls gave their all, some of them for the first time at this level. It is again, so wonderful to see the 'give it all they have got' and 'Strive to Succeed' attitudes from our Tamariki. Stanley Ave certainly performed well on the day (and didn't have to get wet doing it!!!)

Congratulations to the following place getters who will now go on to be part of the Te Aroha team competing at the Thames Valley Cross Country Champs in Ngatea next Tuesday.

Van Gogh in Room 6

Room 6 have been learning about the famous post-impressionist painter, Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent wanted to be known as the painter of sunflowers. Just like other painters working at the time, Vincent made flower still lines. After practicing with different flowers, he chose a specific variety, the sunflower. His fellow painters thought that sunflowers were perhaps somewhat corse and unrefined, but this is exactly what Vincent liked. Here are Room 6's amazing renditions of Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers.

The power of 'Yet' in Room 9

In Room 9, the students have been learning about the things they can do, and the things they find tricky and can't do yet!

The class has read the book 'Giraffes cant Dance' which explores the 'Power of Yet' and learning from your mistakes, as they help us grow.

They have been talking about how our brain is a muscle, and when we have challenging learning it helps our brains grow stronger.

This all feeds into the Piwakawaka Teams' focus on a growth mindset.

Well done to some of our smallest members of Stanley Avenue School. This is some wonderfully challenging learning that will certainly be growing brains to be positive learners!
