2nd Grade Scoop

Mayfield Junior School - April 11, 2016

Field Trip this Week!

On Tuesday, all of second grade will be going to the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse for the play, "Miss Nelson is Missing!" Thank you to the drivers/chaperones for your help with driving and supervising the children in your car. We plan to leave the school at around 10:50am, and will return by 1:45pm. Please have your second grader bring a paper bag lunch. We will eat on the lawn right before the show, and the children will need to throw away their lunch bags and the remaining contents. No food is allowed in the theater.

Eucharist Family Banner

Your second grader and family should be working on the white cloth banner. To review: The decorations should represent your family and the things you like to do together, and must include your family name. You may want to use one or more of the following: permanent markers, acrylic paint, white or hot glue, decorations, and pictures. Please be as creative as you'd like, and definitely have fun doing it! This banner will hang in the gym for First Eucharist Mass. The banners will be due on Friday, April 22nd. As always, please check in with your child's teacher if you have questions.

Mayfield Benefit News - Yes we can do the Hustle!

Wow! What a Benefit launch we had on Friday, filling the gym with students, faculty, staff and many parents, all doing The Hustle! Lisa Byrne was an authentic disco queen in her disco duds, leading the entire crowd! Best of all, we did what we came to do...we broke the record! ...or maybe the best part was the fun of it all!

First eucharist Attire

Second grade girls will wear their white underdress with the white organza pinafore overlay that was either ordered through Dennis Uniform, or borrowed from a former Mayfield second grader. Girls also wear ankle socks and white or black dress shoes. Please be sure the dress shoes have no more than a one inch heel, and must be closed-toe shoes. No tights please. Veils will be provided on Friday, April 29th. Very small religious jewelry is welcomed.

Second grade boys wear concert dress. Please see the handbook for boys' concert dress. Besides the blazer, pants and shirt, they may wear any style and pattern of tie, dark socks and dress shoes, and a belt, to review some specifics. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Last week you should have received an envelope and letter. The letter will ask you to do something for your second grader, but it's a secret so you will have to read it yourself! We have provided paper for you, but you may use your own paper if you wish. We need this returned by Tuesday, April 26th (at the latest) but you may send it in anytime before that date. Please check in with your child's teacher if you have any questions. Thank you!

Earth Day!

Next week Friday, April 22, is Earth Day, and all of Mayfield will be busy with Earth Day activities and field trips. Second Grade will be going to the California Science Center where we will go on a short visit to the Science exhibits. We also will be going to see the Imax movie, National Parks Adventure. We will have several faculty chaperones, and will be taking a bus that day.

Faith Matters: Preparing for first eucharist on April 30th

The second graders are preparing for First Eucharist on April 30th. Your children are studying and learning about the sacrament of First Eucharist, and preparing for their important day. We are assigning "reading" and "doing" parts very soon, because your children will be leading much of the special Mass, and singing special songs of praise.

Once again: The best preparation for First Eucharist that you can give your child is regular attendance at Mass. Talk to your child about the Mass and emphasize that the Mass is God's family celebrating a meal. Start at the beginning of the Mass and explain that as we enter the church, we make the family sign, the Sign of the Cross. Ask your child if he or she knows or can guess why the cross is our family sign. Remind your child that Jesus, by His death on the cross, gave to the world the life that your child will share in; the bread and wine of the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Jesus; life that goes on forever, even after we die.

Remind your child when we dip our fingers into the holy water and make the sign of the cross, we are reminded of the holy waters of Baptism that make us members of God's family. Point out that just as we wash our hands before eating a family meal, blessing ourselves with holy water helps us to remember that before receiving Jesus, our spiritual food, our souls should be cleansed of sin.

If you have not sent in a white t-shirt, please do so asap! We still have a few missing!! Also, Mrs. Crepaux still needs shoe boxes.
