HES Happenings
Where our Monomoy students are 'fin'tastic!
1st graders went to Red River Beach and returned with specimens to observe and study in their classroom aquariums!
All HES buses arrived on time after the start times were adjusted last Wednesday!
Thanks for your flexibility, patience and understanding during these the first few weeks of school.
All parents/guardians are reminded to be at your bus stop 5 -10 minutes early, as any delays at the elementary schools will impact the middle and high school arrival and dismissal times.
If your child needs to be returned to school in the afternoon, parents/guardians will receive a call from the school informing them that the students will be taken to the *closest elementary school for that particular buses's next run i.e at CES for the middle school runs or at HES for the high school runs.
(*Buses H5, H6, H9 & H10 students will be brought back to HES...all other students will be dropped off at CES).
NOTE: on EARLY RELEASE WEDNESDAYS, dismissal will be at 1:35 PM therefore buses will deliver students to their stop 40 minutes earlier in the afternoons. All Early Release Wednesdays can be found the website's district calendar highlighted in yellow.
Notes from the Nurse’s Office -- Mrs. Fiocco
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for my warm welcome here at Harwich Elementary School. I feel as though I have learned so much in my three short weeks here. One thing I have been working on with Sam Hein, Mary Oldach and the staff is the new Monomoy Wellness Policy. If you have not had a chance to look at it, please do so. According to the policy, Harwich Elementary School will be celebrating important milestone in a child’s life such as birthdays and holidays with an emphasis “on physical activities, academic achievements or positive youth development. Examples include the writing of poems for Valentine’s Day, telling scary stories for Halloween, etc.” The birthday child will be celebrated by calling his or her name out during morning announcements, special activities in class and receiving a birthday pencil. This policy gives all children a chance to celebrate equally, even when they have a dietary or allergy issue. The gift of lifelong good health is the best gift anyone could receive!
A new product was brought to my attention recently that is an alternative to peanut butter, called Wow Butter. Wow Butter is a nut free alternative to peanut butter. It is made from soy and manufactured in a nut free facility. When purchasing Wow Butter, there are stickers that identify the product as Wow Butter that accompany the product. Those stickers must be attached to the lunch bag or box to prove that the sandwich is made from Wow Butter and not Peanut Butter. This will enable your student to sit outside the peanut free area at lunch. If you would like to read more about Wow Butter, please go to their website www.wowbutter.com

Reading Interventionist Maureen Keleher welcomes our visiting 'READING' Dogs on their first visit at HES!
The first visit with the "Tailwaggers" was amazing! Nine students participated from three grade levels. (1 second grader, 4 third graders and 4 fourth graders.) All nine students were engaged, relaxed and many hugged Garbo and Toffee before parting. They read to their dogs with smiles all around.
The handlers, Jane and Tom Wilson, explained what goes into attaining the dog's certificates and showed the students the commands the dogs can follow.

Morning Music Selection of the Week at HES!
Pachelbel's Canon in D major is a piece music originally written for three violins and string bass. This recording uses all of the string instruments of the orchestra It became very popular during the 1970s due to a recording by Jean-François Paillard in 1968, and was recognized by many people in many countries. It was used as the theme tune for the movie Ordinary People (1980) and also for song "Rain and Tears" by Aphrodite's Child which became a million-selling hit single across Europe in 1968. It is now one of the most famous baroque compositions, iand in recent years become extremely popular for use in weddings, and as background music in hotels, restaurants, and airports. Even it is centuries-old heritage, the pattern of the music has been used widely in pop music in the 20th and 21st centuries. It has been called "almost the grandfather of pop music".
The answer to last week's question is:
The continent where you will find the Czech Republic is Europe.
