Ellis Island in 1630
This picture is showing how Indians first owned the land which they called at that time Kioshk or Gull Island. But soon dutch settlers took over the land and they called it Oyster Island, and that was because there were a ton of oysters surrounding the land. But in the year of 1776 the island was soon owned by Samuel Ellis. Ellis was originally an owner of a small tavern and catering to fishermen.
Ellis Island and immigrants in 1890
Once Ellis Island was taken over by the federal government and turned into an immigration station, which was the first ever Immigration station. In 1892 the station finally opened. The first ever person who was an immigrant to walk through was a girl and her name was Annie More, who was a teenage Irish girl, as well as her family wanted to start a new life in New York. On the first day over 700 immigrants passed tEhrough. And also in the first ever year 475,000 people passed through Ellis Island. This picture is showing in 1890 Immigrants were getting into the boat to float to freedom.

In 1990 the first Ellis Island museum opened and in the first year with over 400 million visitors. In that year The American Immigrant wall of honor opened, which is the largest wall of names ever made. This is where people can separately have the name of an former immigrant inscribed for posterity. This picture shows the opening of this important establishment.

In 1921 over 560,971 immigrants went through Ellis Island. In this year a new law passed which was called the Quota Law, which added to the administration issues on the island This law provided that the number of immigrants that are now an american are given an amount of people that people can have when it comes to babies. In 2001 The American Family Immigration Center was opened. This center allows for people to explore different immigrants records of more than 25 million people that were passengers between the years of 1892 and 1924. After this program began, more monuments, centers, and museums were made about the history of the Ellis Island and to show how important it was to this country and how it helped to shape our nation.
