Te Karere a te Tumuaki - Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa (hello everyone). It was wonderful to come back to school yesterday greeted with lots of smiling faces. I appreciate how 'Team Gladdy' works well to keep the machine running no matter who is absent at the time - ka pai.
The New Zealand Principal's Federation Conference was held in Rotorua and I felt privileged to be in attendance. We had 5 inspiring key note presentations over 3 days and a number of breakout workshops. All of the speakers put down the challenge to NZ schools to keep going with progress in the culturally responsive space as well as outlining their visions for an equtable, bi-cultural education system. A refresh of our NZ curriculum is currently taking place at ministry level - with science the next to be introduced early in 2022. We look forward to embracing a newly constructed curriculum document that will guide our teaching and learning.
We have had Sarah Sharpe here this week spending 3 days in classrooms observing and working with both teachers and students. We debriefed yesterday afternoon and Sarah started our meeting with ...
"I am feeling very encouraged. There is a positive relationship between teachers and students. The literacy programme is being delivered with confidence and students are engaged'.
The rest of our meeting followed in a similar vein. I am proud of what we have achieved as a school and thank you for the support you have shown while we break ground in the area of literacy. Improving our literacy results and giving students the tools they need to be confident, competent, literate learners is not a quick journey rather a 3-5 year plan. This said the progress we are seeing particularly in the junior school with the LLLL programme over the past 6 months is fabulous.
If you missed the recent parent workshop on Tuesday evening, you can read the slideshow presentation by following the link below. A video recording of the session will also be shared when it is ready.
May we all keep our lines of communication open and work as a team to keep progressing. I look forward to seeing many of you next week at '3 Way Conferences'.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Belinda Bunny
Conferences are scheduled for week 3 of this term (Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th of August). Interview slots start at 1pm and go through until 7:15pm for Y1-6 and from 1pm until 5:15pm for Y7-8.
Appointments will be based around student learning goals for the next 6 months, as well as an opportuntiy for you to discuss recent mid-year reports and any other matters. Conferences are 15 minutes long. If you don't have time to cover everything you would like to, teachers can organise a follow up meeting. It is important we stick to time to avoid running into someone elses time slot - thank you in advance for this.
We encourage students to attend the conferences. This is to enable students, whānau and teacher to all be on the same page with progress moving forward. If you have difficulty booking a time, please contact principal@gladstone1.school.nz and I will we happy to assist.
Proudly Sponsored by

Huge thanks to the team at Masterweave Textiles who have sent out lamb coats for students with new lambs to wear. They are made out of gorgeous mohair & alpaca. If your children get lambs in the next couple of weeks they can collect jackets from the office. We would also love to see some photos of the jackets being used.
