Tips and tricks from Elyria City School District
Dear families...
May's arrival signals the final weeks of school. It seems remarkable that we've reached this point in the year already.
And what a year it's been!
We're thankful to our parents and families for their tremendous encouragement and assistance, and to our students for keeping up with their studies and working hard during these peculiar times.
This week, May 3- 7, is the nationally celebrated, "Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week."
I hope you'll join me in recognizing the incredible team of educators and support staff that make up the Elyria Schools.
This year has been anything but typical. The faculty and administration have managed the twists and turns of the year admirably and I'm exceptionally proud of their devotion and professionalism.
This school year wraps up for students on Monday, June 14.
Monday, May 31, is Memorial Day and students do not have school. Wednesday, June 2, will be an instructional day for all students except preschool.
Students who attend school on the four-day model in elementary and high school will attend in person Tuesday through Friday, June 1-4.
Middle school students in Cohort A will attend school in-person on Tuesday, June 2, and Wednesday, June 3. There's no change to the in-person attendance schedule for middle school students in Cohort B.
Like in-person students, Virtual Academy students will also log in to their Google Classrooms Wednesday, June 2, for a regular day of school.
This slight calendar change gives students an additional day of instruction during the shortened week.
As we prepare to close out the school year, please watch for e-mail updates and announcements from school principals and teachers on end-of-year activities that will be offered to in-person and virtual students.
The buildings of McKinley Elementary, Oakwood Elementary, Prospect Elementary and Eastern Heights Middle are closing permanently at the end of this school year.
The Elyria Schools Communications Office will put together a number of videos at the end of the school year to give parents and residents a last look at the schools via virtual walkthroughs. The team did this last year, too, for Ely Elementary, Northwood Middle, Windsor Elementary and Franklin Elementary, and you'll find them all on Pioneer TV YouTube.
In conversations with Lorain County Public Health, COVID-19 social distancing requirements will still factor into our year-end plans and events. But the 2021-2022 school year is looking up and we are readying for a full return to school for all students in the fall.
In August the district will offer a "kick-start to school" event with activities for the brain, body and soul. All students will be invited to participate and full schedule will roll out this summer so stay tuned!
We're also looking forward to beginning next school year anew with the opening of Eastern Heights Campus in September and Westwood Campus in December.
Better times are ahead, Pioneers. :)
Enjoy the rest of your week!

Free meals for students in 2021-22
The Ohio Department of Education announced it will continue offering free breakfast and lunch to all students who attend schools on the national school lunch plan, which includes Elyria Schools.
Aramark, the foodservice arm of Elyria Schools, has prepared and served more than 2-million-meals to Elyria's children since last March, the start of the pandemic. The company will continue to offer weekly meal distributions on Wednesdays at Elyria High School through the remainder of this school year. Details and pick-up times can be found on the district's website.
Class of 2021 will have Ely Stadium Commencement
Lorain County Public Health gave school districts the go-ahead for more traditional commencement ceremonies though safety precautions will be in place, including limited seating, social distancing and face coverings.
Graduates and their families will receive four tickets to attend the ceremony in person. For those unable to attend, the district will livestream the ceremony and also air the video on Pioneer TV YouTube.
