Welcome Back!!!!

It's hard to believe that we are now embarking upon a new school year. We had many changes last year in the world of dyslexia. This newsletter provides information for the upcoming school year that will be helpful in your dyslexia planning. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need any assistance or have questions.

Grade 7 Reading Instrument Guidance and Waiver Instructions

TEC, §28.006(c-1) requires each school district to administer at the beginning of the seventh grade a reading instrument adopted by the commissioner to each student whose performance on the grade 6 STAAR reading assessment did not demonstrate reading proficiency.

The commissioner has adopted the following:

• Istation’s Indicators of Progress, Advanced Reading (ISIP-AR)

• Reading Analysis and Prescription System (RAPS 360)

• Texas Middle School Fluency Assessment (TMFSA)

• Woodcock Johnson III Diagnostic Reading Battery (WJ III DRB)

LEAs are required to use one of these reading diagnostic instruments. Districts may request a waiver in order to use another instrument approved by a local district board of trustees in order to best meet student needs in the 2022-2023 school year only.

Senate Bill 89 and Dyslexia Handbook 2021 Training and Communication Requirements


The Texas Dyslexia Academy Training 2 is an overview of the 2021 Dyslexia Handbook. TEA is requiring that at least 1 person from each district attend this training to ensure that the information on the processes related to dyslexia and related disorders has been received by every district. The deadline is August 31, 2022.

Region 7 has maintained a spreadsheet that provides the name of district personnel that has completed this training. For information about your district, please email aventers@esc7.net.

The LEA has posted links in English and Spanish to required TEA documents on their local public facing websites, materials, static resources, and information available to parents and staff to reflect the Dyslexia Handbook 2021 update .

BUILD Reading Intervention

The staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children has developed a 100-lesson reading intervention called Build: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention. Build is a small group intervention that addresses five specific components of reading intervention. Each component is taught developmentally using a direct, systematic, cumulative, multisensory method of introduction and practice to meet the specific needs of Kindergarten and first-grade students struggling in reading.
