Hearing Screenings

Heartland AEA will conduct hearing screenings this school year for Kindergarten through 2nd
and 5th grade students.
We encourage you to watch a 2 1/2 minute video with your younger student showing what we do during a hearing screening. The video can be found at: https://youtu.be/ZH5RtzpTJw4. It will
help your student know what to expect when it’s their turn to play the listening game!
Students who do not pass this screening may receive a hearing test by the audiologist at
school. Parents will be notified about the results only if there is a concern. This is a screening
program and does not identify all hearing or ear problems. If your student has recently had
hearing or ear problems, feel free to send this information to the school nurse to share with the
audiologist.
If you do not want your student to receive a hearing screening, please notify the school. If there
are any questions about the hearing screening program in your school, please contact your
school nurse or principal.

Jefferson Knits

Jefferson Knits is in full swing! More than 70 students have had an opportunity to try their hand at knitting, with many enjoying it. You can find a dedicated group practicing and helping one another every day in the library during lunch recess. Students start with a practice piece, then move on to a project: a headband or a coaster. Many students are making their next project, a scarf, and there are lots of Christmas presents being created.

If you would like to gift your knitter with knitting items for Christmas, here are a few ideas:
  • Most students like the bulky weight yarn. Wal-Mart has Hometown USA super bulky yarn (it will have a picture of a yarn ball with a 6 on it). This weight yarn will use size 11 or 13 needles.
  • Worsted weight yarn (a 4 on the label) is thinner, but comes in amazing colors and mixed colors (their favorite!) Hometown Variety and Wal-Mart both carry Red Heart Super Saver. Hobby Lobby has a fabulously soft yarn called I Love This Yarn that is similar, but much softer. This weight yarn will use size 7, 8, or 9 needles.
  • I recommend these two yarn weights and the needles listed. Yarn with a smaller or larger number is more difficult to knit with, and the same is true of knitting needles. Size 5 yarn would also work well, with size 11 needles.
  • Blunt needles with a large eye are helpful for finishing projects. They are available in plastic or metal.
  • A fabric tape measure is also helpful.

If you and your student would like to gift yarn to Jefferson Knits, we need the super bulky Hometown USA. We will begin making hats after Christmas, and this is the yarn we will use.

Any questions can be emailed to: kathy.devos@pellaschools.org

Thanks so much for your support and kind words. Happy Knitting!
