District Updates
Questions
I am sure you have a lot of questions right now as I
do. Look for an email to come next week from LPS
with a Frequently Asked Question Document. You
can add questions and refer to this to see answers
as the district makes decisions and plans. This has
never happened before so we are all learning and
making modifications to our traditional routines.
Thank you for your patience as we work hard to
continue to meet the needs of our students and
families.
Social Emotional Support
REMAIN CALM AND REASSURING
*Children will react to and follow your verbal and
nonverbal reactions
*What you say and do about COVID-19, current
prevention efforts, and related events can either
increase or decrease your childrenś anxiety.
*If true, emphasize to your children that they and
your family are fine.
*Remind them that you are there to keep them safe
and healthy.
*Let your children talk about their feelings and help
reframe their concerns into the appropriate
perspective.
*Be mindful of how much of the news you are
watching in front of your child. Even when it
appears that they are not watching it, they are
hearing it.
*To help anxiety, worry, and to encourage
calmness-utilize deep breathing techniques. Count
to four slowly while inhaling and then count to four slowly while exhaling.
MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE
*Children may need extra attention from you and
may want to talk about their concerns, fears and
questions.
*It is important that they know they have
someone who will listen to them; make time for
them.
*Tell them you love them and give them plenty of
affection.
COPING STATEMENTS FOR FEELING
OVERWHELMED
*Stay focused on the present. What do I need to
do right now?
*It will soon be over.
*Itś not the worst thing that could happen.
*Step by step until itś over.
*I do not need to eliminate stress, just keep it
under control.
*Once I label my stress from 1 to 10, I can watch it go down.
*Take a breath.
