What is the goal for your students?
Here is just a portion:
"Can I tell you my goal for my kids? That their childhood is mostly good. People, I
declare "mostly good" a raging success. If I am mostly patient and they are mostly
obedient, great. If we are mostly nurturing and they turn out mostly well-adjusted,
super. Every childhood needs a portion of lame, boring, aggravating, and tedious.
"Mostly good" is later remembered as "loved and safe.". Mostly good produces healthy
kids who know they are valued and either forget the other parts or turn them into
funny stories."
Now, think about this statement with the students in your class? Some parts of learning are just plain boring, aggravating, and tedious! Let me just name a few: main idea, the writing process, and math facts. And yet, they are the foundation of so many other things that are needed to know in life. Every childhood needs a portion of this!
I think most of us would categorize our days as "mostly good". But, many days, we all get caught up in with one student who isn't good at all and we tend to shift our focus entirely on that student. In fact you might even say your day was ruined by that one student! Why do we get hung up on the 10% who are not doing well, rather than the 90% who are mostly good? "Mostly good" produces healthy kids, remember? Remember this when you need to re-shift your thinking. At E2 our students are "mostly good" which means they are valued and loved by you!
