Ms. Doggett's Class 2016-2017

August/September Newsletter

Great Start to the School Year

We have had an excellent start to the school year! Students have done a fantastic job adjusting to new classmates, routines, and procedures. We have been busy setting T-RIFFIC goals for our school year. Be sure to discuss these with your child so we can work together to achieve their goals this year!

First Unit of Study

We began our year with Social Studies, focusing specifically on Maryland history and geography. Students used books, websites, and primary sources to create an informational book that taught all about a specific topic within Maryland history. During art integration, they created topographical maps of our state. In addition, they created an Adobe Spark video in which they taught viewers about the natural and human made features of one of the three regions of Maryland. We are compiling our hard work into a class brochure which we will share with a class of students in the Piedmont Plateau region of Maryland.

Our next unit of study, which we will begin mid-September, is all about energy! Students will examine the relationships between speed and energy, learn how energy is transferred, and research alternative forms of energy.

Important iPad Reminders

  • Returning iPads to school - Please be sure to return iPads to school each day fully charged. We use them for the majority of our work throughout the day.
  • iCoverage - Have you paid your $15 iCoverage yet? This $15 serves as an "insurance policy" for your child's iPad. It will cover damage to both the iPad and charger. This can be paid online on your "My School Bucks" account, or payment can be sent into school.
  • iPad use at home - students can be reading on Lightsail (does not require internet connection). This app is a perfect way for students to be adding to their monthly reading logs. Stride KCC codes have also been sent home. This is a great tool for students to practice reading and math skills at home. If you are experiencing difficulty accessing any of these sites/apps at home please be sure to let me know.
