School Start Times - Public Forums

The Anacortes School Board plans to review research and engage the community in a conversation about school start times. Any proposed change would be for the 2019-2020 school year (the year after next). Nationwide and across Washington state, a number of school districts are moving to later start times for their middle and high schools. The main reason, based on brain and sleep research, is the development of the teenage brain.

More information is available on our website:

The district plans to hold two public forums to solicit input on this important topic.

Monday, May 21 - 5:45 - 7 p.m. - Island View Auditorium, 2501 J Avenue

Thursday, May 24 - 10 - 11:15 a.m. - NWESD Reid Harbor Room, 1601 R Avenue

Click here to RSVP for one of the forums.

Surveys have been sent out to families, staff and students. Please respond by May 15th.

Long-time arts advocate receives Brodniak Award

Sherry Chavers is this year’s recipient for the Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award for her work with students on poetry and literacy. Chavers shows a passion for learning and is able to connect with students on a creative level through her volunteer work.

Chavers spends time volunteering in classrooms teaching units on poetry. As one of her nominators said, she demonstrates a zeal for poetry which becomes infectious when she enters the classroom.

The Walter A. Brodniak Cultural Education Award was created in 1977, upon Mr. Brodniak's retirement as Superintendent of the Anacortes School District, "to foster growth of the cultural arts in the District." The award is given each spring to a student, faculty member, administrator, school director, community member or community organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural arts in the Anacortes School District during the current school year.

We invite the community to join us at a reception to recognize Chavers on Thursday, May 31 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the Anacortes Middle School library. The program will begin at 5:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.

WWII Survivor speaking in Anacortes

Ingrid Azvedo will share her personal story of tragedy and triumph with the Anacortes community during a public presentation on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at Island View Elementary.

Growing up in war-torn Berlin in the 1940s, Azvedo faced bombs, starvation and devastation. She credits the Berlin Airlift - where aircrews from western allies delivered supplies to West Berlin - with saving her life. Azvedo was invited to Anacortes by a team of Anacortes Middle School students who recently won the State History Day competition for their documentary on the Berlin Airlift.

The community is invited to attend this powerful event. The students will start the evening with a presentation of their documentary. Azvedo’s trip is co-sponsored by the Anacortes Senior College and the Majestic Inn and Spa.
