Kindergarten Newsletter ACES
Week Of April 24th
Highlights from last week....
In Reader's Workshop, we worked on how readers think while they read. We used our schema as we read our books. The children worked on making text to text connections while they read. They compared and contrasted characters in different stories.
In Writer's Workshop, we started to write our own poems using information we put on our heart maps. The kids are really enjoying this unit.
In phonics, we focused on short vowels, digraphs and building words.
In Math, we worked on number bonds and number sentences up to 10. We focused on subtracting or "breaking numbers apart" this week. We focused on number stories, writing the sentence and creating a number bond to match the sentence. We focused on reading number sentences to determine if we should add or subtract the numbers in the sentence.
The kids had an egg hunt before we left for vacation!
A peek at our learning this week....

FLASHCARDS
Please practice letters and sounds with your child nightly! Thank you!
A note from Mrs. Chadwick
There is so much left to do and so little time. Hard to believe we are in the home stretch. We know there is ALOT going on, we hope that you can find time to go over sight words, read each night and practice writing numbers and letters. I will try and send out an updated reading level so you can see your child's progress. I wanted to get this to you before vacation but my munchkin got sick.
Tomorrow I will be sending home a book order. This is different than Scholastic book orders. We will be creating our very own book and having it published this school year. The book is going to be about "If I were a jungle animal". The students will choose their own animal and write about it and illustrate. These are great books. The cost is $20. They are well worth it. I can send home a book from past classes if you would like to see one. At the end of the school year we are going to have an Author night so we can share our books. The other kindergarten class rooms are doing one also.
We will be starting our plant unit. If you have any items that you would like to donate it would be appreciated. Seeds, soil, containers, watering cans, real or fake flowers and plants or any great ideas that you might have please come in and share.
A note from Mrs. Maillet
I will also be sending home the last book order of the year this week. The orders will be due May 10th.
A note from Mrs. Potter
The class is really enjoying learning about poetry during Writer's Workshop! They are so excited to start becoming poets themselves! We chose a topic for a class book that we will be making! Our class will be creating a book about zoo animals! The students are really looking forward to writing about their favorite zoo animal! We will be beginning to learn about plants for our science unit!
Please continue practicing sight words and reading with your child every night! It is hard to believe that the school year is quickly coming to an end and they will soon be first graders!
A note from Mrs. Melanson
We are going to be publishing our own book, titled: If I Were a Forest Animal...., where each child draws and writes about what they would like to be and why. In the near future, a letter will be sent home giving you the opportunity to purchase this book. It's such a great keepsake and your child will be very proud of their work. Will have an author's evening to celebrate their book and see all of the other Kindergarten classes books. More information on this will be coming home soon.
We will be starting a unit on planting. If you would like to donate any clear plastic cups and seeds to our class, please let me know. We can also use more clorox wipes. Now that we serve breakfast in the classroom, we go through them even faster than before.
As always, thank you for everything you do. I know this time of year gets busy with spring sports and dance recitals, but please try to continue to take a few minutes a day to go over sight words and share a book with your child. They are become amazing readers and I am so proud of them!
