Monday Minutes

April 8, 2019

This week we begin our first round of STAAR testing for our fourth and fifth graders. State testing can stir up a lot of anxiety for our students and for us as educators. What our students need now is a sense of normalcy and encouragement. A smile, fist bump, or hug goes a long way to making students feel happy at school. I encourage you to display a positive attitude in all that you do at Bethany this week and just keep smiling! On Tuesday, fourth and fifth graders will be released to their grade levels at 7:20. Please join the grade level teachers in those grade levels for a few minutes to cheer the students on and pump them up for their day of showing what they know. All other students will be released to their grade levels at 7:30. We will repeat the process on Wednesday for fifth grade as well. Our goal in this is to provide our students with a sense of support by their Bethany family and to reduce any anxiety they may feel prior to testing. Thanks in advance to you, staff, as well. State testing means schedule changes, planning changes, and instructional changes. We appreciate all of you digging in and supporting each other!

Instructional Minute

How often do you have students draw when taking notes? Check out the article attached below that discusses the benefits of drawing when learning new information. A new study shows that drawing forces students to process information in multiple ways: visually, kinesthetically, and semantically. The act of drawing is active rather than passive and increases processing. So the next time you have students take notes, consider switching it up a bit. Perhaps have them take three column notes: a word or concept, followed by a definition, followed by a picture. Finishing up a unit of study? Consider having them create a one-pager to show what they have learned, or even as a study guide for an upcoming assessment!
