About Me

Rebecca Carroll

Introduce yourself… who are you?

My name is Rebecca Carroll and I’m 15 years old. I’ve been dancing since I was 3, and am trying out for Lariettes this year. I’m a Senior Girl Scout and have been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. Within my year at New Tech I’ve developed many skills to help me become a leader such as assertiveness, time management, organizational skills, and the ability to delegate. At the beginning of this year it was especially difficult for me to delegate work to group members. I’ve developed this skill through an understanding of trust within groups. Learning this skill has truly helped me to succeed as a leader.

Why do you want to be part of the Learner Leadership Council?

After seeing all the wonderful things LLC has done in the past, I really want to be able to become a part of something that does so much for the school and community. Seeing how much LLC does inspires me to want to do more for my school and my community and shows me that I have the capability of doing so.

What do you think you could offer to the organization and our school?

I have very good work ethic as well as a natural leadership ability. In everything I do, I’m fully committed and I believe my commitment to LLC would have a positive impact on the organizational as well as the school.

What are the three most important qualities you possess as a leader? How will these skills enhance the LLC and our school?

The 3 most important qualities I possess as a leader are dedication, motivation and enthusiasm. By being dedicated, LLC won’t have to worry about whether or not I produce high quality work that will benefit the group. I also follow through with my commitments which will benefit the school. By being motivated I have a personal interest in the work I do and being successful with the group and within the school. By being enthusiastic those around me will be positive as well, leading to higher quality work benefiting both LLC and the school.

What would you consider to be a weakness of yours and why?

Perfectionism is my biggest weakness. Though it may be beneficial at times due to the fact that I always want everything to go as planned, I’m learning that I must be flexible and able to adapt depending on the situation.

Give an example of a time when you have served in a leadership role. Please describe how you led the efforts and explain how people responded to your leadership.

I am currently on the top dance company at Lifesong Studio. As a member of the elite company, those on younger companies look up to my team members and me for guidance as well as how to act. We recently attend the Dupree dance convention where we took approximately 6 hours of intensive dance classes followed by completing our numerous routines for judges. Then the next day approximately 6 more hours of intensive instruction. Going into this long weekend, very few people were excited and I was not one of them. However I made a conscious effort to be positive and push through the long days. By doing so I noticed that the attitudes of others as well as the way they acted began to change and become more positive. Through this I was able to see how effective I am as a leader at my studio.

What is an example of an obstacle or challenge you have experienced and overcome as a leader? What do you feel this says about your problem solving and people skills?

As a leader I have struggled with trusting others to do important tasks. I often fear an assignment may not be completed or won’t be held to high enough standards. Throughout this year I’ve had to go out of my comfort zone in order to develop mutual trust within groups. I’m now more capable of trusting others in difficult situations.

Describe how you work as a member of a team.

As a team member, I always strive to do my best in and outside the group. I hold myself as well as my team members to a high standard, allowing us to produce work that we can be proud of.

Explain your favorite high school memory and why it was significant?

So far, my favorite high school memory was having the opportunity to perform at the Slamming For a Cause poetry event the freshman held to raise money for UNICEF. I loved being able to create something that was moving to the audience and I really enjoyed listening to and writing poetry. In addition I found it really inspiring that my freshman class came together to raise $2,000 for UNICEF.

Anything else you would like the selection committee to know.

I am proud to be a student at New Tech and believe that I have a lot to offer to LLC.
