Our Team

The Counseling Department has changed the way we divide caseloads; with the opening of the Academies of Shakopee, Counselors are each assigned to one of the six Career Academies. In addition, each Counselor will also take on a portion of the Freshman Academy divided by last names. We are also excited to announce the Freshman Academy Resiliency Counselor who will work with students to build the skills they need to succeed in high school.

You will see three new counselors on our team this year. Tracy Caruso is moving to the High School after working at East Junior High for the past 3 years, and Vicky Haas has returned to the US after working as an International School Counselor in Bangkok, Thailand for the past 5 years.

Counselor Events & Lessons

The Year at a Glance

While a School Counselor’s day-to-day tasks can be unpredictable and are ever-changing, there are certain School Counselor happenings that students and families can count on each year. Take a look at our yearly calendar below. The items in regular font take a good amount of counselor time, but will not be direct interactions with students. The items in bold are events and presentations that students can expect to see us face-to-face.

Fall Senior Meetings

With the move to Academies, our senior meetings looked a little different this year. In the past, we have gone to each English 12 class and presented; this year, we decided to have seniors sign-up for a group senior meeting with their Academy Counselor. We did not have 100% attendance, but we were excited for the opportunity to meet with our seniors in small groups!

The meeting focused on general information that seniors need while planning for the next year. Topics range from college applications and requesting transcripts to exploring all post-high school options and stress management. Please take a minute to look at the information we provide the seniors.

October is College Knowledge Month

Shakopee is participating in College Knowledge Month, Minnesota's month-long initiative to encourage students to complete applications, apply for FAFSA, and learn more about their college options. We have designed activities throughout the month to promote a college-going culture within the building. See exactly what we are doing and how you can support us here.

During College & Career Readiness Day, counselors planned a variety of sessions for seniors to attend that would be relevant to the variety of options that seniors have post-high school.
