Food Program - YAY!
USD 497 Food Services has exciting news to share with our families!
Earlier this week, the USDA announced that schools may apply to extend the free meals program that our district participated in throughout the summer. USD 497 Food Services has been granted approval by KSDE in time for the start of the school year on September 8. At this time, we are able to continue to serve all children in the community ages 1-18 for free during the first six-weeks of 100 percent of remote learning. Below are our grab-n-go times and locations:
Serving Days
Monday-Friday
(Fridays include weekend meals)
Pick Up Sites and Serving Times
Hillcrest Elementary 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Kennedy Elementary 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Sunflower Elementary 12:30 PM -1:30 PM
Lawrence High School 4:30 PM -5:45 PM
The USDA has stated that this program extension of free meals for all students will be available until allocated federal funding is depleted. We will keep families updated if this occurs and we are required to return to charging students by eligibility status (i.e., full pay, reduced-price, free) in order to allow time for families to add funds to student meal accounts as needed.
Due to the limited time that we anticipate funding may be available, it is important that families submit updated free/reduced-price meals applications. Household applications are accepted throughout the school year and, if approved, are effective through the last day of the 2020-2021 school year. Additionally, households must apply for meal benefits to be eligible for waiver of fees. Applications and instructions can be found by clicking here.
If you have any questions, please contact our office at FS.Office.Staff.365@usd497.org or 785-832-5000. We are thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity for our families. Thank you for your continued support of our program!

Instructional Support Services
Deerfield Parents/Guardians:
Lawrence Public Schools offers math and reading academic support programs across all elementary schools. The district’s goal is to provide the opportunity for each child to reach their maximum academic potential. At Deerfield, math and reading are taught in the classroom for 90 minutes. Our instructional support staff offer services to supplement classroom instruction that include in-class assistance and pull-out small group instruction. The purpose of small group instruction is to teach and reinforce foundational skills necessary for classroom success.
Students are selected to participate in our math and reading small groups through a combination of factors. These factors include teacher recommendation, in-class performance and benchmark assessments. If your child is selected to participate in small group instruction, they will attend a daily 15-30 minute session with a math/reading instructor. A student’s instructional plans may change as progress is monitored throughout the academic year. You will receive communication via phone call, email or letter to confirm your acknowledgment of participation any time your child begins or stops receiving services.
If you have any questions regarding our Instructional Support Assistance programs, please contact Joni Appleman, Principal, 832-5660.

Reminder: Remote Learning Attendance
Attendance will be taken twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon:
- If your child is present online for remote learning anytime between 8:00-11:30, they will be counted present for the morning.
- If your child is present online for remote learning anytime between 11:31-3:05, they will be counted present for the afternoon.
If your child will be absent from remote learning:
- Parents must notify the office for the absence to be counted as "excused". Truancy will be enforced during remote learning (Truancy is filed when a student has 3 consecutive unexcused absences or 5 cumulative unexcused absences in a semester.)
If your child is absent for the entire morning (8:00-11:30), the entire afternoon (11:31-3:05) or the entire day:
- The teacher will email a learning log and assignments for that day to parents.
- Parents will need to complete the learning log, documenting that the student completed 180 minutes (1/2 day) or 360 minutes (full day) of instruction off-line.
- Learning Logs should be email back to teachers within 5 school days.
