Week of September 25, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
We had a fun filled end to our week last week! We began on Thursday with the Pre-K through 4th grade Coffee with the Principal event and continued with 5th grade through 8th grade on Friday. We then got to end our Monday with our High School parents Coffee with the Principal at 5:00! It is always a joy to get to speak to everyone about what is going on not only in the school but in our children's lives as well. We also enjoyed a weekend of Welcome Back Picnics! It's always nice when we're able to do these kinds of events with our families and we always look forward to being able to provide these opportunities to everyone in our school.
Congratulations to our wonderful students for taking part in Rivers Alive Clean Up Program this weekend. Please see the details of this event including some pictures below.
I also would like to congratulate our Volleyball Team again on two consecutive wins last week! This brings them to 5-2 and they continue to grow as a team and get better every day! I wish them good luck on their upcoming games this week on Wednesday and Thursday!
Good luck to our cross country team as well on their meet at Mill Springs on Thursday evening!
GO MUSTANGS!
CONGRATULATIONS TO FSA COMMUNITY!
I have good news for you! Just like our students have their percentile rankings compared to their peers in the nation. Schools also have their percentile rankings compared to other schools in the nation based on each school's mean score in each grade. Our goal is to rank in 99% (Top 1%) for all subjects in each grade in the nation. Therefore, I am sharing our school's mean score, the mean score needed to be 99 percentile, the difference, and the percentile ranking of our school with you here:
Scores like these do not come easy and only possible through team effort! Therefore, I would like to congratulate all of our students, parents, and faculty members for their hard work!
It is easy to see that we are an exceptional school! While we are doing really well as a school collectively, it is also important we all improve individually. Therefore, it will be important that all of our students show progress individually between their fall and spring scores as well. That will be the goal of all of us! We are just taking off! Congratulations again!
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE DAY - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6
Our teachers will be reaching out to our families to schedule conferences, as needed. Teachers will have an opportunity to conference with families on Friday, October 6th from 12:30-4:30. If your child's teacher needs to schedule a conference, your child's teacher will reach out to you. As always, please feel free to always reach out to a teacher if you need to schedule a conference at any time. Our teachers are always willing to meet with parents as needed.
DISMISSAL PERMISSIONS
In an ongoing effort to keep our students safe, we ask that if your student is to be going home with another student, that that student's parents also have a dismissal card for your child. If they do not have a dismissal card, please email the front desk and let them know who will be picking your child up. We must have written permission in order to let your student go home with another student. You can send these emails to rcondon@fultonscienceacademy.org and smelton@fultonscienceacademy.org
We also ask that parents and students try to schedule these pickups ahead of time and not on the day of, as this will provide everyone with a more streamline pickup process.
MONDAY & FRIDAY ELEMENTARY CHESS CLUB DISMISSAL
Elementary Chess Club students who have chess club on Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 are not required to go to carpool. These students should be picked up at 4:30 from the front lobby. Parents of these students, please have your dismissal cards ready when you come in to pick up your students at 4:30. This dismissal process for these students will alleviate stress from the parents as it will be easier to pick your child up.
8TH GRADE FAMILIES - HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION MEETING
We will have a high school information meeting for 8th-grade students and parents on Thursday, October 12 at 5:00 pm in the school cafeteria. We will inform our families about our high school program.

Kenan Sener,
Principal

A Message from the Clinic
FAQ:
Does the school provide medications?
Yes, the school does provide medication. The over the counter medications are listed on the back of the FSA information card. A parent signature must be provided along with a completed form and filed with the school clinic.
What if my child needs other over the counter medications?
Medication must be brought to the front office or school clinic by the parent / guardian except as otherwise permitted. An "Authorization to Give Medication" form must be completed and filed at the school clinic.
Where can I find Authorization Forms?
Authorization forms can be found in the front office or in the school clinic.
Why do medications have to be in the original container?
The original container provides information from the manufacturer about over-the-counter medications, including information such as the proper dosage, how the medicine should be given, possible side effects etc. The original prescription container includes important information such as the patient's name, the health care provider, the proper dose, when the medication expires, etc.
Can my child take herbal medications at school?
No. Over-the-counter diet pills, vitamins, dietary supplements, including minerals or herbs will not be given.
Can my child carry his Epipen or asthma inhaler at school?
Yes, students may carry inhalers and Epipens with a completed "Authorization to Carry Prescription Medication" Form JGCD-10 on file with the clinic.
Why is there a place for the health care provider to sign the authorization form for my child to carry their inhaler / Epipen at school?
The health care provider's signature indicates that your child has been instructed on the proper use of their inhaler / Epipen and that you child is responsible for administering it to himself / herself without supervision. The form can be faxed to the health care provider and then faxed back to the school nurse.
Why do I have a prescription label on the inhaler / Epipen?
The prescription on the inhaler / Epipen includes the child's name, how often it is to be used and what dose is appropriate for your child. It is difficult to keep the label directly on the inhaler / Epipen. You can write your child's name on the inhaler / Epipen and bring the labeled box to the clinic.
If I give my child Tylenol for a fever, can I still send them to school?
If the fever is more than 100.9 degrees F before you give them the Tylenol, then your child cannot come to school. Your child may return to school when his / her temperature is below 101 degrees F without Tylenol or any other fever reducing medication for 24 hours, if s/he feels well and is not showing signs of illness.
If I give my child Tylenol for aches and pains can I still send them to school?
Your child is welcome at school while taking Tylenol and any other over-the-counter medication for an injury, dental work etc. However, if the medication is for a sore throat, earache, or flu like symptoms, please keep them at home.

Cross Country
The cross country team competed in its first ever meet, the RAM Invitational in Athens on September 2nd. Top finishers in the other races were Shelton W. in the middle schools boys 3K, and Darwin K. in the high school boys 5K. The Mustangs next travel to Mill Springs Academy for a twelve-team meet on September 28th.
STEAM Team "Recyclables Turned to Art" Needs your Help!
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
As you know we are doing a course called STEAM for grades 6-11. Students have already submitted topics, team members, and they have received their steam teachers. Our 7th grade steam group: Aileen H. Sydney X. Ranjani V. Nina T. and Derek Z. need certain materials that are not easily accessible. We need donations of items like old toys, broken toys, used school materials, magazines, old books, small broken pieces of anything, small knick-knacks and trinkets that you do not want or need around your house. We also really need bottle caps. There are boxes in the Cafeteria and by the Front Desk where students can drop off their donations. They are at the entrance right where they walk in first thing in the morning before they are released to their lockers and right by the trophy cabinet in the Lobby. There are multiple boxes, each labeled by category. All students need to do is bring in their donation(s), drop it off in one of the bins and one of the students from our team will come by at the end of each week and collect the materials. Note that they don’t have to be a specific color, shape, or size. Anything that you would easily throw away you can donate. Thank you for your participation!
ART calendar contest
All students in Kindergarten through 11th grade are invited to participate in the 2018 Art Calendar Contest, sponsored by the Fulton County department of Public Works, Water Resources division. This contest is open to Fulton County students attending public, private, and charter schools, as well as home-school students. Students are encouraged to create artwork promoting better habits for water quality and water conservation. The goal of the art contest is to serve as a daily reminder of the significance of water in our lives.
Thirteen drawings will be selected and featured in the 2018 Art Calendar and winning students will receive a gift certificate and 5 copies of the calendar to share with family and friends! Students were first introduced to the calendar contest in Art Class during the third week of school and have been encouraged to work on their own submission (if they would like to) during any free time in Art Class. Students may pick-up an Art Calendar contest guideline sheet and student entry form in Mrs. Sanders’ classroom at any time. FSA Cares for a Cure
It is with great pride that we invite our fellow parents, FSA students, and our incredible faculty to please join together for a noble cause.
Please see a video of last year's campaign here:
Currently, our school lobby is a sea of yellow, including 11 festive yellow jars that symbolize CURE's signature color. These jars are waiting to be filled with coins! Each jar represents a grade (high school grades will work together.) As the jars are filled, weekly totals will be tallied with the help of our students and results will be updated on our school's brand new "Care-o-Meter" visible outside the cafeteria and in the carpool pick up area.
To invite some well-spirited competition, the grade that fills their jar with the most money will win a prize at the end of the month. Classes in grades Pre-K -- 4th will compete for prizes as well as classes in 5th grade - high school.
In addition to the jars, we have set up a secure online giving portal where families, relatives, businesses, or any Mustang supporter can make a gift to support the "Coins for a Cure" outreach initiative.
To donate online, please click this link: https://donate.fultonscienceacademy.org/give/106177?amount=null#!/donation/checkout
They say that charity begins at home, and I imagine that your children will start by asking you, perhaps daily, for spare change to fill their jars. I implore you to please inspire our students to look outside our homes and school, and to empower them to become active PERSONAL fundraisers by asking for community support to help us exceed our goal of $10,000.00.
By reaching out into our neighborhoods and local communities, we achieve more than just a higher total for charity... we have the opportunity to show the community what wonderful, service-minded students we have at FSA.
All of the time spent raising money for this cause will count towards service hours for your child! In order to be successful, the kids need the full support of the parents and faculty! Room parents, please reach out to your teachers and ask how you can help. Teachers, please take some time to discuss with your student and ask them for their ideas.
Please send any photos you take of your children supporting CURE through their philanthropic efforts to smelton@fultonscienceacademy.org so that we can share these images with CURE and some of the local families whose children are fighting cancer right now.

Character Ed Trait for September is Self Control
Self-Control is “knowing you can, but deciding you won’t”.
Controlling your body and words can be difficult when you are feeling emotional. Having self-control means you are able to act in an calm way, when your impulse is to react emotionally. Self- Control also means staying quiet, when you wish you speak. This character trait is one of the most difficult to master, because it requires managing your behavior.

Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
