A Note from Nurse Courtney
Happy 2023! I hope you all had a restful break with your loved ones and found some time to recharge your systems. Here is the first official Health Office update of the New Year. I hope you're pumped!
For the month of December, I had 492 visits and more than my usual number of dismissals. I've had months in past school years with almost 600 visits so this isn't horrible, but it certainly felt busy! No one liked getting a phone call from me this past month! The top visits were related to 1) upper respiratory symptoms (congestion, cough, runny nose) 2) gastrointestinal upset 3) non-serious musculoskeletal injuries. The stomach virus and Flu A made its way around all grade levels. It seems the conjunctivitis uptick peaked in November (knock on wood). I've heard of several cases of upper respiratory illnesses that resulted in ear infections in both students and staff. Adults don't get ear infections as often as kids do because our eustachian tubes are fully grown and bacteria aren't as easily able to travel down the tube into the middle ear. However, with everyone dealing with lingering illnesses as well as our systems getting used to "being normal" again, it has certainly been a busy fall. My optimistic (naive?) hope is that most everyone met their illness quota in the first half of the school year and 2023 will be the healthiest year on record!
