Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
August 23, 2019
What a GREAT First Week!
It was a pleasure for me to see you at Meet the Teacher night. I was forced to go through all of the information very quickly due to time constraints, so I hope you were able to grab everything I said and make some sense of it all. The most important point I want you to understand is that I care deeply about your children. I tell them that while we are at school I am their mom. I am their biggest cheerleader, protector, and advocate. I ALWAYS have your child's best interest in mind when making decisions. I welcome emails and invite you to always feel free to come in and talk to me about questions, concerns, or thoughts you'd like to share. I am available to meet in the morning from 7:40 - 8:00 am, and again from 2:45 - 3:10.
I have about 14 parents that have joined the REMIND app for our class. I would encourage you to join in. It quickly helps us stay in communication about important happenings in Room 9. I do not overuse the app, so do not worry that you will be bombarded with messages from me. If you need help connecting, let me know!
If you participate in Social Media, our class has a Twitter account - @MrsGreene4. I post pictures quite frequently!
I am thoroughly enjoying my time with your children. It has been so much fun getting to know them.
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your weekend!

August Birthdays!
Room 9 Celebrations
A few student highlights from our week:
We talked about the importance of sharing our work with others in the class...being brave and stepping up to let Mrs. Greene share writing under the document camera, showing our math thinking by showing our work to everyone in the class, etc...It helps us learn from the successes and failures of others. Yes, failures! Some of the best lessons we learn come from our own or someone else's failures, so... we celebrate failures! I ask the students to give me their GIFT:
G: Their work is Given with permission (they get to tell me if they are ok sharing their work)
I: The Intent of sharing their work is for everyone to learn and grown
F: The Feedback we give the student is FOR the person, not about the person.
T: Targeted for success
Sophie was the first to volunteer her writing to go under the document camera this week. From her, we learned a few lessons. First, her writing was very neat and Mrs. Greene enjoys reading neat work!! We also learned to write sentences that are longer and not so choppy. YAY, Sophie!
Lucy won an autographed poster of Matt Wilhelm at our Anti-Bullying Convocation Today!
Next Week...
- Building a reading life. Visiting and understanding the organizational structure of our classroom library. Your child should have a chapter book that he/she is reading. We are discussing reading stamina and sustaining attention to one book.
- We will learn about the different literature genres and will review them all with a fun Jeopardy game.
- I gave a few "book talks" this week to get kids excited about some different authors and genres. This is something I do frequently. If you ever need suggestions for different books your child might enjoy, please let me know. I have several thoughts/suggestions.
Math:
We have been very inconsistent with homework this week. We are learning the routines and procedures of math workshop and this TAKES TIME!!! We are slowly getting the hang of things, so I suspect next week will be more consistent with homework. Remember, the Homelink Journal does not need to be returned to school each day. If your child struggled with math homework, please send me an email, write a note in your child's assignment notebook, or have your child put a post-it note on the parking lot. I will spend time going over the skill during math class. Next week we will work on the following skills:
- Time to the nearest minute
- Elapsed time
- Bar Graphs
Writing:
- Review of conventions: capitalization, punctuation
- Responding to a picture prompt
- Using children's picture books to spark writing topics
- I will introduce the students to a 3rd Grade Writing Rubric next week. Students will be expected to use the rubric to check his/her work when finished with a piece.
Social Studies: Unit 1 Geography of our World
- Hemispheres
- Continents
- Countries
- States
- Cities/communities
Word Study:
I gave a spelling preassessment last week. There were 22 high-frequency words on the assessment. I graded the assessment and handed it back to your child. We have used the list to study with a partner, practice online using quizlet and quizizz, and do some personal studying. I will give the same assessment next week. The goal is for your child to have mastered the words on the next assessment. We have been reviewing spelling skills that were taught in primary grades (vowels/consonants, prefixes, suffixes, roots, syllables). We will dive right into learning new spelling skills after Labor Day. Remember, there is NOT a weekly list that comes home for memorization each week.
