Weekly eNews Update
Spain Park High School 10/11/19
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe that the first nine weeks ended this past Wednesday, October 9, 2019. Please expect your student’s report card in the mail after Thursday, October 17, 2019. Should you have any questions about your student’s grades, the first point of contact is the teacher. The end of every nine weeks is a chance for students to self reflect on their academic performance. I believe taking a thorough look at what went right and what went wrong during this first grading period will be beneficial as our students go through the academic year.
Please be aware that Monday, October 14, 2019, will be a teacher professional development day, therefore no school for students. I hope our students enjoy their long weekend and are ready to get back to work on Tuesday. We will give the WorkKeys make-up test for seniors, and the PreACT make-up test for Sophomores on Tuesday, October 15, 2019.
We will give the PSAT test on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, for those students who have signed up to test. Due to the nature and timing of this test, our buses will run the Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday morning schedule. Please see the “Important Information” below for more details.
Our student body gave our Special Olympic Athletes a grand send-off for their competition in the Special Olympic Games. We are very proud of these athletes for competing and representing SPHS in a very positive way. Click Here for the send-off video.
In a previous newsletter, I mentioned the mentoring program that Coach Raney has started between faculty, staff, and football team. It has been such a success, WBRC 6 requested to interview our faculty and players- please click here to enjoy the interview.
As you might have heard, we have a little get together with our friends across town this Friday night. Along with the competition on the field with Hoover High School, we are also competing to support HOOVER HELPS with the Hoover Helps Hunger Challenge. Please consider donating here, or at the game. I ask that you support the Jag Nation to win the battle on the field and the Fight against Hunger in our community.
Next Friday night, October 18, 2019, we will recognize students who have scored a 30 or higher on the ACT. The ceremony will be held at the Spain Park vs. Oak Mountain home football game during the pre-game festivities. We are gathering data on the students who fall into this prestigious category. If your student has scored a 30 or higher on the ACT, please complete this form ACT Recognition Form by 10/14/19. The information collected from this form will be the sole source of information used to organize this ceremony. Students received this information through their Google Classroom this week. See the details below.
As always, I am available to hear your feedback on how we can make SPHS a great place to be.
Sincerely,
Peter L. Giangrosso

Veterans Day Project
The SPHS student body will be focused on "doing the packing" for 500 boxes with toiletry articles, food snacks, underclothing, (“incidentals”) and "thank you" notes during class periods on November 6th and 7th. Subsequently, the boxes are to be mailed overseas to our active-duty military men and women by the Support-Our-Soldiers organization, and in time for the holidays.
October through November 1st is scheduled for volunteer contributions. Parents, students, faculty, and all interested, who would like to have a part in this worthwhile and patriotic work, may donate incidentals for packing and give a half-box provision of $10 or a full-box provision of $20. You can donate on My School Fees or send a check payable to SPHS.
World Heritage Week
Students will be hosting World Heritage Week, October 21-25, 2019. We will be celebrating the many cultures that are represented here at Spain Park. There will be various events going on in AO throughout the week. Each event is ticketed to allow for space. Be sure to get your tickets from Miss Suarez by Friday 10-18-19. Watch for announcements in your Grade Level Google Classroom and listen for them during AO announcements.
