HUGE SHOUT OUT TO KACI ATKINS
Kaci is a senior at Hylton High School and a Rosa Parks graduate who decided to give back to her community. For Kaci's Eagle Scout project and her Gold Star Girl Scout project, Kaci and her band of volunteers created an outdoor learning space for our school. Between the two wings of our building you will now find a beautiful outdoor rock garden with boulders to sit on and a bench. You will also find 8 raised garden beds for our students to study native plants of VA and other perennials. Thank you Kaci for your idea and your creation! As an IBPYP school, community service and making a difference in the world is part of our vision. Sometimes small ideas become big ones... We are grateful for your kindness!
PLEASE BE SURE TO FINISH THE SCHOOL YEAR STRONG!
This is the time of year that we have to dig down and finish strong. Be sure to talk to your scholar about the importance of giving their best every single day. Yes we are looking forward to summer fun and we are excited about our families and summer trips, but we have a lot of learning that is still happening. Most teachers are finishing important units of study, some of our last unit tests, and PALS testing. IXL is a great program for Math review and extension.
LEXIA
I want you to know how proud we are of all our students in grades K thru 5. All year long our students have been using Lexia to improve their reading and reading skills. Here is some of our data. At the beginning of the year, based on a Lexia level test we had:
68% of our students reading below grade level (395 students)
28% of our students reading on grade level (159 students)
4% of our students reading above grade level (23 students)
As of today - Thursday, April 27th
32% of our students reading below grade level (187 students)
36 % of our students reading on grade level (205 students)
32 % of our students reading above grade level (185 students)
Yes we still have work to do, but what a celebration of improvement!
Please understand that Lexia is only 1 measure of a student's reading knowledge and ability. It is so important that you monitor your child's reading comprehension, reading functional text (menus, recipes, advertisements, flyers), fiction, and non-fiction text.
Please know that when using Lexia it is not always the amount of time students spend, but the number of units they complete. We still have all of May and time in June to continue working in Lexia. While computers in grades 3, 4, & 5 won't be going home in May due to SOL testing, our students will have time in school to work on Lexia.
