Great News from PTO!!
OUR AMAZING Big Hollow students raised-
$23,210 to be distributed to Big Hollow Grade Levels & Enrichments!
This year we benefitted from 19% student participation! (Up from 13% in 2017!!)
Funds Raised per Building
Elementary $9,850
Primary $8,166
Middle School $5,129
Congrats to Colin in 3rd grade for being elementary's top fundraiser with $560!!!
This means Michelle will be reading on the roof (tentatively on 10/26) AND getting taped to the wall by students who raised money only (tentatively in the afternoon on 10/29).
Grade level checks will NOT be provided this year. Instead, once grade levels determine what funds will be used for, teams can submit the information to the principal and PTO, and PTO will process the payment/check.
Bernie's Book Bank Drive News

Student Involved Conferences
Student-Involved Conferences
Traditionally, students perform for an audience of one—the teacher. So it was with considerable pride that Anne Davies related how a handful of members of a student's family traveled hundreds of miles to take part in a student-led conference about the pupil's work. The boy led the conference with confidence and a reflective mind-set as he described his learning accomplishments and failures. When it was over, the child's father told his teacher that even though the family was close-knit, they had seen a side of their son that they hadn't seen before.
This anecdote highlights two of the favorable results of involving students in self-assessment, said Davies, a presenter and experienced teacher. First, when parents (and other family members) see the value of hearing a progress report from students themselves, they buy into the process wholeheartedly. Second, students—when given the chance—can prove remarkably insightful about the quality of their work and what they need to do to improve it.
Describing work she is doing in several schools, Davies explained that in student- involved conferencing, parents and students themselves review students' work, discuss strengths and areas of growth, and contribute to an improvement plan.
Laying the groundwork for successful student-involved conferences is vital, Davies said. Students and parents must understand what the learning goals are, and parents, in particular, should regularly review samples of their child's work. "If parents walk into the conference knowing nothing about how learning goes on in your classroom, it's not going to be a successful conference," Davies noted. Students and parents need to understand their roles at the conference. And, of course, they need to give thought to the strengths and weaknesses of the student's work, as well as how each party can contribute to the improvement plan.
One of the most popular types of conferences involving students is the three-way conference, which involves the teacher, the student, and the parents. The process for the conference, which is "chaired" by the student and takes about 15 minutes, is as follows:
- The teacher asks if the parents have any questions or comments. (Note the parents' concerns and questions, Davies advised—but don't feel obliged to answer them right away. They can be saved until the end of the conference or for another meeting.)
- The teacher reviews the process of the conference.
- The student, then the parents, then the teacher share three strengths the student has demonstrated in his or her work.
- The student, then the parents, then the teacher share two areas that the student needs to work on.
- The student articulates goals for future work (with assistance, as needed, from the parents and the teacher). Each party pledges specific kinds of support for the goals.
- The teacher answers questions, recaps, and concludes the conference.
Davies offered these other tips: Don't strive to set more than two or three new learning goals; that's the most you can keep focused on. Try hard not to dominate discussion; be a listener. If there are "big issues" that need to be discussed (for example, that a student needs to get to work more quietly), insist that students bring these issues to the table for discussion. And always offer parents the opportunity for a traditional meeting with the teacher. There may be major issues (such as a divorce or a death in the family) that require a more private meeting.
Upcoming Curriculum Work
Our next CIA meeting is October 25th.
During our next meeting we will be reviewing curriculum maps/unpacking standards, and discussing common formative assessment indicators and types.
Meetings will be 90 minutes and will be scheduled as follows:
October 25
9:00-10:30- 4th Grade
12:20- 1:50- 3rd Grade
2:00- 3:30- 2nd Grade
PE will meet with Barb on October 23rd this month.
On October 19th, we will be using that early release time to work on unpacking standards and curriculum mapping.
On our November 2nd Institute Day, we will be using at least a half day to work in teams to curriculum map and unpack standards.
On our early release November 16th, time will be provided to work on report cards.
In early December, teams will be given a half day work day with Barb and Michelle and subs will be provided on a rotating basis. The focus will be on curriculum mapping and unpacking standards as well.

School and Student Attendance Goal
1.) Each child will receive a monthly attendance punch card from the office. I'd like to ask for your help in ensuring these cards are put somewhere safe each day. My thought is that one responsible student in your class could be given the classroom job of "punching" each of your students' attendance cards for each day they come to school. That way, your students can see their progress as the month goes on. I will make sure each month's punch card reflects the actual number of student attendance days each month to reduce confusion due to days off, institute days, etc. Each month, students who have perfect attendance will receive a special plastic reward tag to add to a chain for their backpack.
2.) The office will be calculating each classroom's monthly attendance. The goal will be set at 95% or more. Each class that reaches this goal will receive a special bulletin board piece to put on the bulletin board by the music room where each classroom will be represented. I will be rewarding each class that reaches or exceeds the 95% attendance goal each month. By the end of the year, the graph will show the class(es) that have met this goal most consistently, and those classes will also be rewarded in May.

- On your computer, open Google Calendar.
- Go to the date(s) you would like to schedule your meetings/observations. Hit the plus sign in the top right corner.
- Enter in your name and purpose of meeting in the title, (i.e. "Dawn Smith, pre-observation meeting")
- Make sure to set the time the event will start and end.
- Make sure the correct calendar is chosen.
- Scroll down and go to Invitees.
- Enter my email address: michellehetrovicz@bighollow.us
- Hit Add in the top right corner. The event should appear in your calendar and I will get an invite.
Tenured staff on the evaluation cycle will be observed formally at least once this year. Tenured teachers may request an additional formal observation if it is desired. At least one formal observation needs to be complete by March 1st. Summative evaluations for tenured staff need to be complete by May 1st.
Nontenured staff will be observed formally at least twice this year. If additional observations are necessary or desired, they may be conducted. The first formal observation needs to be completed by December 1st. The second formal observation needs to be completed by February 1st. Summative evaluations for nontenured staff will be complete by March 1st.
Informal observations will continue as well and will be used to complete the end of the year summative evaluation for all staff on the evaluation cycle.
Here is a document you could use to help plan your observations and lessons. **Make sure to create a copy before editing!!

There will be a quote by the gym that many of you have asked for, there will be a cafeteria "awning" painted above the cafeteria doors, and the student washrooms will be given some TLC. These projects will most likely be completed over holiday break. Be on the look out for these amazing additions to our learning environment! So exciting!
