Saint Kateri School's Weekly Newsletter ~ July 8, 2020

Happy Summer!

Hello Saint Kateri School families,

I hope you have been enjoying your summer schedule and that you have a cool place to relax in this heat. As we reflect on this past weekend, I imagine that you probably celebrated a little differently than in year's past. Large gatherings, street dances, town fireworks, festivals and fun runs were canceled. (That being said, the fireworks in my neighborhood might rival the Town of Irondequoit fireworks ~ and Misty dog was not a fan.) I spent time with family, canned strawberry jam ~ something that I haven't found the time to do in many years, listened to the Hamilton soundtrack MANY times, cooked and roasted marshmallows. It was a time to slow down and savor time with family ~ and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

As the 2019-2020 school year ends we can officially turn our efforts to next year but plans have been in process long before school ended regarding a reopening plan for September. Schools are preparing plans, and contingency plans, using the information that is available currently from state and local agencies and the CDC. We would love to get your input about your concerns and ideas about how reopening might look in September. Below you will find the request and link to a survey from Jim Tauzel, Superintendent of Catholic Schools. Families will have until this Friday, July 10th to complete the online survey. Each school will receive the feedback from their school families to use in planning. Be sure your voice is heard by completing this brief survey ~

Reopening plans are in process as we await guidance from New York State. There is a lot to consider when developing the plans to make the greatest effort in keeping our students and teachers healthy ~ physically and mentally. Teachers want to be in the class, with their students, learning together. Students want the same and to also be with their friends. We are all working hard to create a safe and engaging learning environment in our school. I will be reaching out soon with details on ways you can be part of the conversation. If you have ideas, or want to be part of a school task force to discuss options ~ please email me.

God bless all of our Saint Kateri School families ~ Godspeed to our graduating 5th graders and to the students who are leaving our building, and to our 5th grade families that will no longer have a Saint Kateri School student in our building. Thank you for your years of support for our school ~ passing the torch to others who are here, ready to continue the work you have started! May you all continue to share your SKS Spirit and be Christ for others!

Did you hear?

There is a lot that we do not know about next year but there are a couple of things we DO know and are excited to share. Next year we will have some of our current Saint Kateri School teachers moving up with their students ~ they will graduate together!

  • Miss Garbach will be moving up with her Kinders into First grade
  • Ms. Tabor will be moving into the Kindergarten position
  • Miss Hanss will be going into Fourth grade with her students
  • Mrs. Cleary will be taking her students into Fifth grade

We are currently in the hiring process as we do still have open teaching positions to fill. More information to come ~

The rising 5th grade class was invited to gather on the lawn at school for some social distancing fun!

Our Saint Kateri School Rainbow Garden is growing! The flowers are doing well in their new home and the vegetables are loving this hot weather. Some of the lettuces are ready to clip ~ if anyone wants to come and taste test the harvest. There are tiny baby cucumbers starting to appear where the plant is flowering. It is amazing to see the changes in such a short time.

Please feel free to stop by the garden ~ it is our school garden ~ and we welcome anyone to come by to weed, water and and snip a couple lettuce leaves and check out the baby cucumbers! They are so cute ~

If you come to school during our summer office hours we do have a rolling watering system that you can use, it runs on human power and kids would love it!

Rainbow Mass

The 5th grade class led our closing Rainbow Mass on Friday, June 19th at 9:00am. It was streamed to YouTube so it could be watched LIVE or in the future.

This Mass included a coming together of our traditional Rainbow Prayer Service and the 5th grade Celebration! A huge Thank You to Mrs. Schreiber and Mrs. G for their beautiful music and for Fr. Gonyo's thoughtful and inspiring homily. Thank you to Mrs. Schott for helping with the practices and the technology of putting this all together. Miss Eveland ~ your students showed so much faith and responsibility and reference ~ thank you for all your guidance in bringing them to this place.
