Continuing Education for Teachers
Join Us for a Continuing Education Event
Holy Trinity Montessori invites you to join us for a two-day seminar on the topic of Multisensory Structured Language Education. This course is presented by Joann Bevens, an Instructional Specialist with Metro Nashville Public Schools. Joann holds a Master's degree in Special Education from Texas A&M University, is a Certified Structured Literacy Teacher, and has been teaching MSLE for seven years.
About This Course
Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) is an instructional approach that incorporates the simultaneous use of visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile sensory modalities to link listening, speaking, reading and writing together. MSLE has been proven effective with struggling readers and students with dyslexia, and it is endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association and the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. MSLE is explicit, direct, cumulative, intensive, and focused on the structure of language.
In this course, participants will:
- Have a working understanding of Dyslexia including characteristics, methods of identification, intervention and long term outcomes.
- Gain strategies to support the five essential components of effective reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension) as well as effective strategies for teaching spelling.
- Learn the basic components of multisensory structured language instruction through the ten steps of the S.P.I.R.E. reading program, including rationale, methodology and best practices.
Participants will earn ten hours of professional development.
