Lisbon Lions Care: Book Drive for Children in Puerto Rico
Here in Lisbon, we feel so fortunate to not be touched directly by natural disasters such as hurricanes. Unfortunately, those areas that were impacted by the recent hurricanes are still in recovery and working on rebuilding. We have a connection to a group of families who are still recovering from the destruction brought on the island of Puerto Rico. As a school, we are collecting books for these children. If you would like to participate, please send in a new or gently used (no tears or markings in the book, please) book with your child to school. Over the next two weeks (November 6-16), we will be collecting books to be sent down to Puerto Rico for the children. Here in school, the students will make cards to send to the families letting them know that we are thinking about them and sending cheer through the simple gesture of a card and book.
Thank you, in advance, for your generosity and thoughtfulness in sharing a book with these families who are continuing to struggle to resume some normalcy of life.
On Friday, November 10th at 8:40 a.m. LES will celebrate Veterans Day. If you are active or retired military and would like to join us, please email Mrs. Anoff at debra_anoff@hcpss.org .
Parking for Veterans Day Celebration
Due to our student arrival procedures, we are requesting that you park in our side parking lot closest to the Lisbon United Methodist Church. Our student buses arrive between 8:20-8:30 and students enter the building at 8:30. Please be considerate of our Lisbon neighbors and park in designated parking areas. Please DO NOT park on Church Alley in front of any driveways or designated “no parking areas”.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Fall Conferences
Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for November 20, 21, and 22. Conferences will be with homeroom teachers. In order to schedule conferences, you will need to login to HCPSS Connect. HCPSS Connect will open to schedule conferences on Friday, November 3 at 9:00 a.m. The program will close on Friday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m. The directions for parent conference registration linked here from the HCPSS website. If you have any questions, please call the front office at 410-313-5506.
Please note: This is the only conference period for the school year. There was no conference window built into the HCPSS calendar for February or March.
Math Conferences
We will have limited amount of available conference times in November for math conferences. Those times will only be available after our homeroom conferences have been scheduled. If you find it absolutely necessary to meet with your math teacher during the November conference window, please call the front office any time after Wednesday, November 15th and we will try to accommodate your request. Please remember that if you are in need of a math conference later in the year, you can always schedule a time with your child’s math teacher. Teachers are always available throughout the year to conference with parents.American Education Week:
The National Education Association was one of the creators and original sponsors of American Education Week. Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: "An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs." The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938. American Education Week is always celebrated the week prior to the week of Thanksgiving.
This year, American Education Week is being held from November 13-17. In keeping with tradition, Lisbon Elementary invites our families (adults only) to support education by joining us at school. While guests are invited to join us throughout the week at any time, various grade levels are also hosting special events throughout the week. Below is a chart of the dates and times of these events.
- K: Nov. 16 @ 11:30 a.m.
- 1: Nov. 17 @ 10:00 a.m.
- 2: Nov. 15 @ 9:00 a.m.
- 3: Nov. 16 @ 2:00 p.m.
- 4: Nov. 14 @ 1:15 p.m.
- 5: Nov. 16 @ 12:00 p.m.
If you choose to come at a different time, you will find the master schedule by clicking on the following link to assist in your planning.
Please keep in mind that regular instruction will be in place and we ask that siblings not come into class at that time. Student conferences are being held the following week and teachers are not available during the day for this purpose. We hope that you are able to join us during American Education Week!
