Finding Winnie
This year's One Read with the Springfield Public Library
One Read
Winnie was a real bear purchased by a World War 1 solider, then later moved to the London Zoo where he met Christopher Robin Milne. Christopher developed a friendship with the Winnie, and this inspired his father, A. A. Milne to write many stories about Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, and their friends.
During the first part of April, each class at Sherwood will listen to the story and share our thoughts, questions, and reactions during our library / information literacy time.
An Evening with Illustrator Sophie Blackall
From her childhood obsession with Winnie the Pooh to deep research at the London Zoo, author/illustrator Sophie Blackall tells the story behind the making of "Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear," winner of the 2016 Caldecott Medal and the featured title for the Library's 2017 One Read. Sophie has illustrated more than 30 books for children, including the New York Times best-selling series, "Ivy and Bean." Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
Hundred Acre Wood Party
Celebrate our One Read book, "Finding Winnie," as we journey into the Hundred Acre wood for Winnie the Pooh-themed games, crafts and activities.
"Finding Winnie" StoryWalk®
Join us for two special storytimes at the Park Central Branch Library, where we'll kick off our StoryWalk® featuring "Finding Winnie" by Lindsay Mattick. StoryWalks® combine three important elements that promote learning: reading, moving, and enjoying the outdoors. After we read our StoryWalk® book, we'll walk around downtown and enjoy the book again, displayed on signs in local business windows along the way. Families can return to the downtown area again to enjoy the book through April 29.
Animals of the Allies
Did you know that your favorite "silly old bear" was inspired by a real life Great War mascot? You’ll be surprised to discover the true adventures that took a very special bear all the way from the Canadian wilderness to the Hundred Acre Wood. Join Cherie Kelly from the National World War I Museum & Memorial in Kansas City, Mo., to learn all about the important roles winged and four-legged friends played in the First World War. During this family-friendly talk you’ll also discover how a German pup from No Man’s Land became a Hollywood superstar and how a pigeon named Cher Ami became a major war hero.
