COUNSELING
Advanced Academic Withdrawal Guidelines
The process for students requesting to withdraw from advanced-level courses has been updated for the 2022-2023 school year. These updates apply to Honors and AP courses in grades 6-12 and are also being shared with families next week. Please review the Advanced Academics Withdrawal Guidelines and Advanced Academics Withdrawal Request information. Counselors have been provided a digital withdrawal form template that can be customized based upon campus needs.
Points to highlight are:
- Course withdrawal procedures have been updated to reflect a 9-week grading period.
- Students have the option to withdraw from a course for any reason within the first three weeks of school.
- By remaining in a course for a full grading period, students can more accurately assess their potential for success in a course by taking advantage of all assessments, any reassessments, and individualized interventions in collaboration with the teacher.
- Students who believe that a course withdrawal is in their academic, social, and emotional best interests may do so at the start of the second 9-week grading period or at the start of the spring semester for a 2-semester course.
AVID
Guest Speakers Needed
Every year in AVID one of our most impacting components of the program is having guest speakers share about their profession. McMillen AVID students are always thinking about college majors, and they love exposure to as many as possible. That's where guest speakers help the most. Whether you own a business, are in the medical profession, the world of transportation, hospitality, engineering, law, human relations, trade professions…we would love to schedule you to speak to our students. They are always interested and have an abundance of questions. If you would be willing to come share your profession with us, or if you know someone who would like to come be a guest speaker in our AVID classes, please contact Mike Abney, our AVID Coordinator, at michael.abney@pisd.edu. Please consider sharing what you do with our students! We're looking forward to hearing from you.
