Book Summary

Jonas lives in a community where everything is orderly. During the ceremony of Twelve though, everything changes. He isn't assigned a job like the rest of the Twelves, but is instead selected to be the new receiver. He meets The Giver who transmits memories into him. Jonas learns about color and snow along with many other things. Once he finds out that no one else knows these things and that everyone is oblivious to what is going on, he is determined to make them understand and find out more about it.

Jonas is a Twelve and has been selected to be the next receiver. He has the ability to see beyond and can see colors. Jonas soon learns that the other citizens in the community do not know what he knows. He tries to make them understand, but they just think he's weird.

Overall Rating

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. The Giver was pretty interesting, but it had it's boring parts as well. I liked how Jonas didn't take the pills for his stirrings, because it was sort of the first time that he did something he wasn't supposed to do and got away with it. What I didn't like was how the community was controlled and everyone was so oblivious.
