What you really need to know
Thank you for you making the time to attend our mini-day to help your children get acclimated to their new school. They are already arriving independently in the morning, ready to get to work. Giving them space and time to navigate their path to the classroom and follow daily routines on their own is crucial to helping them develop self-help skills and confidence in themselves.
Thanks to everyone for the many supplies you have provided from our wish list to help keep us all healthy, clean and shiny. I think we have amassed enough bandaids to last the whole year. And possibly next year too.

What we've been up to.
- Learning each other's names! There are 22 of us (including Mrs. Cohen) so this will take a while.
- We have already visited the library and borrowed books for the first time. Please return all books on or before FRIDAY each week.
- Exploring the classroom and making choices in the different learning centers. This week we tried drawing, blocks, dramatic play, library, snack and math. A NOTE ABOUT SNACK: Please provide a small, conservative snack! Our time together is limited and one snack with one drink is more than enough to get us through the morning. So think crackers OR fruit OR yogurt OR cereal, but please not all four :) Please also label your child's snack so they do not accidentally eat their lunch in its' place and remember NO NUTS. Thank you!!
- Learning our daily routines.
- Touring the school to find our way to the gym, the office, the library, the cafeteria, and the music room.
- We made a collaborative book already! Oh yes, we did. It is based on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? but is much better (sorry, Bill Martin Jr.) because it has all of our names in it.
- We began talking about the shapes and sounds of letters. We learned that Tt makes the /t/ sound, like in "top".
- We explored, built, counted and compared with cuisenaire rods, a very cool counting tool that painlessly fools kids into learning math concepts.

Have some fun with the Koo Koo Kanga Roo guys. Seriously. We will learn this at school and it will be hilarious.
The things kids say. For real.
Mrs. Cohen: The centers you can choose today are math, drama, drawing or blocks.
Student: Is dramatic the same as drama?
Mrs. Cohen: Yes.
Student: Is there drama now?
Mrs. Cohen: There's always drama in kindergarten :)
