K-1 and 3-5 Gifted Testing
Parents,
If you are interested in your grade K-1 or 3-5 child testing for possible placement in one of CFSD gifted programs, testing permission forms are located in the school office or online at the District Gifted Website. Please download or obtain a copy, and have your child return it to his/her homeroom teacher. http://www.cfsd16.org/index.php/academics/student-support-services/gifted-programming.
K-1 Optional Testing
Our District's gifted offerings for K-1 students are the Extended Math and Reading groupings which are instructed by the classroom teachers. Math and reading placement decisions are based on district measures of classroom performance and achievement; and, in line with state law, a test of abstract reasoning ability such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is also offered.
Since classroom performance tends to be a more reliable indicator of instructional need than cognitive ability testing in the primary grades, CFSD does not require scores from a test like the CogAT for placement in extended reading or math groups in the primary grades, K-1. Please contact your school's gifted specialist, Mr. Green (tgreen@cfsd16.org) if you have any questions about the need for your child to be formally assessed using the CogAT. CFSD's gifted pull-out programing begins in grade 3.
K-1 Testing (student must be present at both sessions):
Students should be settled and comfortable for their assessment which begins promptly at 7:15 A.M. Please follow the signs pointing the way to the IDS classroom, #103.

Placement into Extended Math and/or Extended Reading classes does not require CogAT testing scores. Students should be settled and comfortable for their assessment which begins promptly at 7:15 A.M. Please follow the signs pointing the way to the IDS classroom, #103.
