Big Idea
Give students a chance to share positive things about themselves and build a caring classroom community at the same time! "Tell Me Something Good" is an activity that allows students to share something positive from any aspect of their lives.
Directions
*Set the tone for "Tell Me Something Good" by letting students know that they will be sharing something positive from their lives. It can be from any aspect of their life- school, home, friends etc.
*Choose students to share using whatever management strategy you choose. Limit the number of students sharing to 3-5. "Tell Me Something Good" is meant to be a quick activity (share in 60 seconds or less), however can be done as often as desired.
*Students share their one positive thing. To keep the activity focused, explain to students that they should share the highlight of their positive life event, not necessarily the entire story (this is important especially for primary students who like to talk :)). Once the student shares, another student should ask a follow-up question. The best follow-up questions are open-ended, and can’t be answered with a simple yes or no answer. You can post a list of good follow-up questions students can use. Repeat this process with other students chosen to share.
When To Use
No only is "Tell Me Something Good" a great activity to use at the beginning of the year to set the foundation for a positive, caring environment but it is also great to use throughout the entire year to encourage positivity.
Ideas for using during the year might include:
*During class meetings
*On Fridays to reflect on the week
*After a break
Strategy Variations
*This activity can be adapted to meet any age/need of students.
*Reverse the activity and have students share a positive thing about another student- make it a compliment activity.
