Traditional Block:

This week Traditional students will continue work in Unit 8: La Cuisine. In this unit student will complete a project on the cuisine of a chosen francophone country, as well as vocabulary for food and dining. Assignments due this week include:

Early Calendar:

This week in EC courses students will finish work in Unit 9: Les Passetemps and begin work in Unit 10: L'Ecole. Students will learn stress pronouns and begin and review school vocabulary. Assignments due this week include:

As a part of the requirements of the course, students are expected to attend live sessions with the instructor (1 session/unit). The dates/times of live sessions will be provided in this section of the newsletter each week. The schedule for this week is:

Please note that to avoid confusion, all students will now share one live classroom. While the course calendars for early calendar and year-long students will not match those of traditional block students, year-long and early calendar students are still welcome at any session (and vise versa with traditional block students!) In addition to selecting a session by the schedule, note the material that will be presented to ensure that you are selecting the session that will be most beneficial to you!

To access the live classroom, students should click the link in Blackboard titled "Live Classroom French 1." It is suggested that for the first time they arrive approximately 15 minutes early to ensure that they are able to enter the chat room and check the functionality of all tools. Students should log in with both their first and last names, or if attending by teleconference, they should identify themselves to the instructor upon entry.

EC Section 1 - Mme Karen Miller

"One of my all-time favorite francophone dishes is Cheese Fondue. La Fondue originated in Switzerland as a means of stretching food over the long winter months. La fondue is composed of an assortment of melted cheeses, wine or beer and spices. It is served with a variety of dippers including breads, vegetables and fruits. My family particularly enjoys the combination of a sharp cheddar with the tartness of a granny smith apple. It's also fun eating for kids!"

Sections 1 and 2 - Mme Claire Driscoll

"Bonjour! Moi, j'adore cuisiner de temps en temps (from time to time). Pour ma famille, et surtout (especially) mes enfants, on aime bien manger de la fondue au chocolat (chocolate fondue). C'est simple et délicieux. Bien sûr on adore manger de la fondue au chocolat avec des bananes (bananas), des fraises (strawberries), des pommes (apples), des poires (pears) et des ananas (pineapple). C'est extraordinaire!"

Sections 3 and 11; YL Section 3 - Mme Ashley Padgett

"J'adore les crêpes! I love crêpes because they are a multi-purpose food. You can eat them for le petit déjeuner (breakfast), le déjeuner (lunch), or le dîner (dinner)! They can be an entrée or a dessert! When I was studying abroad in Montpellier, we would go to Crêperie de La Comédie for lunch - my favorite savory crêpe had du gruyère (cheese), du jambon (ham), des tomates (tomatoes), et des oignons (onions). Later on, we'd go back after dinner for dessert - not sure I could pick a favorite here, but I did love the crêpe au Chantilly (whipped cream) and the crêpe au Nutella! Click the link below for a simple recipe. Add your favorite meats, cheeses, and vegetables for lunch, and add your favorite fruits and sweets for dessert. Bon appétit!"

Section 4 - Mme Melissa Harrelson

"J'adore cuisiner (to cook) et manger (to eat). I like to cook difference cuisines from around the world. My French favorite doit être (must be) le baguette! It took me awhile, but I finally perfected the baguette with the right pan and flours. I did not purchase any store-bought bread for over 25 years, making our own loaf bread, pita bread et bien sûr, le baguette. Pendant l'hiver, j'aime cuisiner le coq au vin ou les boeufs bourguignon. Pour les desserts, je fais les éclairs pour les enfants (I make eclairs) et je fais la crème brûlée, la favorite de mon marie (my husband's favorite.). Le mari de ma soeur est venu de Libon. (My sister's husband came from Lebanon), so I learned all their family recipes, too. Toute de ma famille aiment (all my family likes) rolled grape leaves, tabouleh, and hummus on a regular basis."

Section 5 - Mme Jean McDaniel

"L'été de 2012, I spent trois semaines in Québec. During my time there I ate La Poutine avec (with) mon amie, Sara. La Poutine is basically les frites (fries) avec la sauce (gravy) et du fromage (cheese). This sounds a bit heavy and peculiar but keep in mind that this dish is usually consumed during winter after a full day of cold weather and dog-sledding! It is so yummy! Miam! My family enjoys this toute l'année (all year), même (even) s'il fait chaud! Nous aimons les frites tout le temps!"

"Ma cuisine favorite est le fromage français (French cheese). J'adore le Roquefort, le Camembert et la Brie aussi. Avec ça, j'adore aussi les olives. And when I am in France, I eat bread all of the time which is strange because I hardly touch bread in the US. Mais mon plat favori est, sans doute, les fruits de mer (seafood) qu'on trouve dans le sud de France (south of France), en Provence. I love the steamed mussels, shrimp and oysters. But above all, I like French pastries, especially la madeleine! We call it Napoleons but the French would never call it that. So délicieux!"

"My favorite dish is mousse au chocolat. I made it in college for the French Club one yet. It was delicious."

"J'habitais en France depuis 8 mois dans la région Alsace-Lorraine. Il y a une grande influence d'Allemange (Germany) dans cette région. Mon plat favorit c'est la choucroute garnie! C'est un plat avec choucroute (sauerkraut), 5 types du porc (5 types of pork), des pommes de terres (potatoes), et des épices (and spices). On peut l'acheter au supermarché dans boîte (in a can) aussi :)"

Sections 13 & 15 - Mme Lovelady-Alfonso

"Pour moi et mes enfants, nous adorons tous les escargots comme entrée.(appetizer) Oui, c'est 'snails' en anglais, mais superbe avec du beurre et de l'ail, miam!! (with garlic and butter)

Comme plat principal (main dish) c'est la fondue au fromage (cheese fondue) avec du pain (bread) qui me plait tellement (that I like so much) , spécialement pendant l'hiver en Suisse (during winter in Switzerland)!

Aussi en hiver, j'adore boire du chocolat chaud ainsi que mon fils (I love to drink hot chocolat like my son), c'est délicieux!

Enfin pour le dessert, c'est aussi une spécialité d'hiver que je désire...c'est la bûche de Noël (Yule log) which you can get in many different flavors.
