Crawford's Corner... A Message from the Principal
Greetings Crockett Cougar Community! Happy New Year to you all! The New Year brings resolutions to us all. One of our goals at Crockett is to dramatically improve our attendance for the spring. We have an attendance cadre that meets monthly to discuss a variety of ways to improve our attendance. We will also be forming a student advisory council to gain insight from students about attendance as well. Within this work, we will recognize good and improved attendance, monitor attendance more closely, and provide outreach to our student and families.
According to Attendance Works, "Improving attendance matters because it reflects:
*Exposure to language: Starting in Pre-K, attendance equals exposure to language-rich environments especially for low-income children.
*Time on Task in Class: Students only benefit from classroom instruction if they are in class.
*On Track for Success: Chronic absence is a proven early warning sign that a student is behind in reading by 3rd grade, failing courses middle and high school, and likely to drop-out.
*College and Career Ready: Cultivating the habit of regular attendance helps students develop the persistence needed to show up every day for college and work.
*Engagement: Attendance reflects engagement in learning.
*Effective Practice: Schools, communities and families can improve attendance when they work together. "
They also noted that, "chronically absent 9th grade students are 10 times more likely to not graduate on time compared to students who miss five or fewer days."
Furthermore, the safety of all our students is our top priority at Crockett Early College High School. Because of some recent Austin Police Department activity at the park next to campus, I want to remind students and their families of one important safety measure students can take. Please talk to your students and encourage them to stay on campus at all times to ensure their safety. Except for seniors going to lunch, students are required to remain on campus during school hours.
Please feel free to contact teachers, counselors, and administrators at 512-414-2532, if you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance. As always, thank you for your support in of Crockett ECHS.
Albert Einstein said, "learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."
I have much hope for 2018 and look forward to seeing us remain Always Victorious!

StudentINC Reverse Pitch Competition
Crockett Entrepreneurs in the StudentINC program will be joining in the Reverse Pitch competition beginning January 17th. After an opening night event, where local businesses pitch their leftover materials to our students, teams will form around the challenge of repurposing these materials to keep them out of the waste stream. Our students will compete for $5,000 matching funds from the city in a final pitch to investors the week of March 7. This is a great event for students to gain experience, exposure, and the chance to launch a new business!

The Crockett National Honor Society fall service efforts were very successful, thanks to our 52 members, including the 10th-12th grade students inducted in our November ceremony. The members decided to open up the group to sophomores this year, and we appreciate the dedication and enthusiasm they bring. | Over Thanksgiving Break, many of the NHS members were among the hundreds of youth volunteers at the Chuy's Children Giving to Children parade, a favorite Austin event. | Thanks to everyone who made donations to our toy drive, including many amazing AVID students! We filled all 250 gift boxes for Operation Christmas Gift, and then some, the minivan was at capacity! · 25 donors presented to donate (and 5 were deferred).
