Field Trip - Wilson Lake - May 1st

Two of our 1st grade classrooms with be taking an educational field trip to Wilson Lake on May 1st from 8:05 am to 1:15 pm for Ard & Votroubek.

Book Fair Preview & Sales - May 1st - May 3rd

Our spring Scholastic Book Fair is here and all books as Buy One, Get One FREE!!!! The book fair runs as follows:


Wednesday - May 1st - Preview

Thursday Sales - 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

Friday Sales - 8:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Girl Scouts - May 2nd & May 16th

Girl Scouts will meet on May 2nd and May 16th from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

Ice Cream Social - May 3rd

Hawthorne will be hosting our annual Ice Cream Social on May 3rd from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Hawthorne Gym. Tickets have been sent home with students. The ticket are available for $1.00.

They are still in need of volunteers. Please contact one of the PTO members if interested in helping. They will need parents to help with dipping ice cream in the kitchen on Friday, May 3rd from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Please remember we are a NUT FREE SCHOOL, if you are planning on bringing a dessert in.

Run/Walk for Wrieden - May 4th

This is the 2nd annual run/walk to remember our colleague, teacher, and friend, Kristen Wrieden. The Run For Wrieden will begin at Hawthorne Saturday morning. The schedule is below:

9:30 - Dedication

9:45 - Run/Walk

11:30 - Lunch.

Staff Appreciation Week - May 6-10

Staff Appreciation Week is a time each year when we take an opportunity to show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate them. We encourage our students to show their appreciation as well. Students may participate in the following:


May 6th - Dress like a teacher day - Students are encouraged to dress like their favorite teacher or staff person.

May 7th - "They're the real MVP." - Students can write staff a note telling them how much they appreciate them.

May 8th - Dug Out - Students can buy or draw a flower for their favorite staff person. Little Chiefs PTO will be delivering a carnation flower on May 8th to any staff member your child wishes. This could be be their Teacher, Associate, Special Teacher, Secretary, Nurse, Principal, Assistant Principal, etc. Anyone you can think of. Staff Appreciation Week is always celebrated at the same time as the National Teachers Appreciation Week, which is the first full week in May. Please summit the form that your student brought home to their teacher or directly to the office by May 3rd. We will do the rest.

**This is optional of course*** We are encouraging students to draw, paint, pick or buy a flower for their teacher/staff members.

May 9th - World Series Day - Students may wear their teacher's favorite color.

May 10th - 7th Inning Stretch - Students may bring their teacher a classroom supply (Expo markers, tissues, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, etc.)

Field Trip - Shimek Forest - May 6th

Field trip to Shimek Forest on May 6th from 8:45 am to 2:00 pm for Wessel/Maglairi/Umthun.

2nd & 3rd Grade Testing - May 7th, 9th, and 14th

All 2nd & 3rd grade classes will be participating in testing May 7th, 9th, and 14th. 3rd Grade will be taking the state required ISASP while 2nd grade will be taking the new CogAT test. Please make sure that your student's are well rested and eat a healthy breakfast to prepare themselves for the tests. We're going to do great!

Field Trip - Wilson Lake - May 8th

Field trip to Wilson Lake on May 8th from 8:05 am to 1:15 pm. The following classes will be attending : Radel & Delperdang.

Bowling - Kindergarten Classes - May 9th

All Kindergarten classes will be traveling to the Arrowhead Bowl for a fun morning. Here is the schedule for the following classes:

Hayes/Wilson/Worster/Quinlan - 8:30 am to 10:00 am

Bruce/Hinton/Wacker - 10:10 am to 11:40 am.

Hy-Vee Character Winner Lunch - May 10th

All students who have been Character Winners will be treated to a Lunch at Hy-Vee on May 10th.

Field Trip - Johnson Farms - May 10th - Cancelled Due to Wetness

All 1st grade classes will be traveling to Johnson Farms on May 10th. This is a rescheduled trip from the fall. First grade classes will be leaving @ 9:15 am and returning @ 11:15.

3rd Grade Visit to GW - May 13th

All 3rd grade classes will be visiting George Washington School on May 13th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm to check out their new school for the 2019-2020 school year.

Pre-School & Headstart Visit - May 13th

Hawthorne will open our doors for a visit for all Pre-School & Head start students on May 13th as they prepare to transition to kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year.

Pre-School - 9:00 am & 12:30 pm

Head Start - 12:30 pm.

Bowling - 1st Grade - May 14th

All 1st grade classes will be traveling to the Arrowhead Bowl on May 14th for a morning of fun. Here is the schedule for the following classes:

Biggerstaff/Delperdang/Votroubek - 8:10 am to 9:30 am

Ard/Radel/Stutzman - 9:40 am to 11:00 am

PTO meeting - May 13th

Our monthly PTO meeting will be held in the Library. This meeting will start @ 5:30. All parents are welcome to attend and help with our activities here at Hawthorne.

Literacy Picnic - May 17th

Literacy picnic for all volunteers and students who participated in the Literacy program on May 17th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Graduate Walk Thru - May 17th

Our High School Seniors who will be graduating will be walking thru the halls of Hawthorne on May 17th in celebration of their success.

Graduation - May 19th

Graduation @ Wright Field house @ 2:00 pm on May 19th for all graduating seniors.

Field trip to Historic Nauvoo on May 20th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm for the following classes:

Field Trip - Central Lee High School FFA - May 20th

All 1st graders will be traveling to Central Lee High School for a field trip on May 20th from 8:30 am to 11:30 pm.

Bentley's Playground - Ms. Kuckelman's class - May 20th

Ms. Kuckelman's class will be going to Bentley's Playground on May 20th from 11:45 am to 2:00 pm.

Library Books Due - May 20th

All library books are due back to the library on May 20th.

Field Trip - Historic Nauvoo - May 21st

Field trip to Historic Nauvoo on May 21st from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm for the following classes:

Brooks/Magliari/Hetzel

3rd Grade Bowling - May 22nd

All 3rd grade classes will be traveling to the Arrowhead Bowl on May 22nd for some fun. Here is the following classes schedule:

Brooks/Hetzel/Magliari - 9:30 am to 11:00 am

Folluo/Umthun/Wessel - 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm

Field Trip - Library - May 23rd

Mrs. Wilson's class will be traveling to the Keokuk Public Library on May 23rd from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

Birthday Lunch - May 23rd

We will celebrating our May birthdays on May 23rd.

Birthday Lunch & Book Store - May 24th

We will be celebrating all June birthdays on May 24th. We also will be having our monthly book store during the day. Parents are always welcome to help celebrate your student's birthday.

3rd Trimester Award Ceremony - May 24th

Hawthorne Elementary will be celebrating our 3rd trimester awards ceremony on May 24th @ 1:45 in the Gym. It's a time for us to celebrate the achievements of our students and congratulate them for a job well done!

NO SCHOOL - May 27th

There will be NO School on May 27th due to Memorial Day,

Bentley's Playground - May 29th

All 1st and 2nd grade classes will be walking to Bentley's Playground for some end of the year fun.

1st Grade - 8:30 am to 11:00 am

2nd Grade - 11:30 am to 2:00 pm.

End of Year Picnic - Kindergarten - May 30th

All Kindergarten classes will enjoy their day at Rand Park for their year end celebration. This will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Last Day of School - May 31st

Student's last day of school will be May 31st. We hope you have a relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Box Tops

Don't forget! If you have Box Tops collecting at your home please send them to Hawthorne with your student. Each box top is worth 10 cents that Hawthorne can use to support your Little Chief. The class that provides to most box tops with earn a popcorn party courtesy of the Hawthorne PTO!!
