Permenter Longhorn Check-In
Week of February 13 - February 17, 2023
A Note from the Principal:
As we prepare for CHISD's Random Acts of Kindness Week, I can not help but reflect on the kindness deficit I see within some of our students. While we do have some students who look for opportunities to show kindness, we have a growing portion of our student population who finds comfort in violence. I am saddened each time we have a physical fight or other violent outburst on our campus. We are so much better than that and yet so many of our students are desensitized and find these antics very much the norm. For those not engaging in the fighting, we have also warned them about the dangers of running to the fights and recording them for a disturbing source of personal entertainment.
Many of these fights are the result of conflicts that begin with improper engagement on social media. Please be in tune with your scholar's social media activity because I can assure you for every one person "starting" something on social media, there are countless others participating and encouraging the inappropriate banter. When in doubt, trade the smart phone with all the bells and whistles for a flip phone. Many of our students just can not handle the access and temptation of all the unproductive content that is so easily at their fingertips. Our academic and discipline data shows that we have no time for distractions such as these.
Hopefully, our Random Acts of Kindness Week that begins tomorrow will serve as a "reset" in positive interpersonal communication. Please encourage your scholar to sign the district's Random Acts of Kindness Pledge.
A few reminders and announcements:
- This is a short school week for our scholars. They will only attend school Monday - Wednesday of this week and will not return until Tuesday, February 21st.
- As has been the norm all year, deliveries for students will not be accepted February 14th. Also, students are not to bring large gifts, stuffed animals, balloons, etc. on campus that day.
- Spring parent conference dates are the evening of Thursday, February 16th and the Friday, February 17th from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. No conferences will take place in person. All conferences will be scheduled through Sign-Up Genius and will take place virtually or over the telephone. Slots will fill up quickly, so please confirm soon. No visitors will be allowed on campus during the slots of parent conferences.
- If you are unable to get scheduled into a slot for this week, please contact your child's teacher(s) and they will communicate other options.
- Scholars will not have to make up any of the days missed due to the inclement weather this month. There will be days staff have to make up, but not students.
- For our 8th graders, I hope you completed the Longhorn Level Up Link sent last week. Only 150 8th grade scholars from our campus will be able to participate in the Longhorn Level UP VIP Experience. This is a GREAT opportunity for our scholars and I know everything our CTE department does is done in the spirit of excellence.
- Our students have the opportunity to participate in the district's Jr Chefs Competition. Parents/guardians should help their child complete and submit the required form by email, or through Cafeteria Manager no later than 4:00 p.m. on February 28.
- All students are encouraged to participate in our Black History Month themed attire days beginning Tuesday, February 21st. A flyer is available in this newsletter with attire information.
- We will begin our STAAR simulation February 21st. We will be a closed campus for the duration of all testing days and no visitors will be allowed on campus. More information to come.
- Our campus will host a Black History Program Thursday, February 23rd. All students must be accompanied by their parents to attend. The event begins at 6:30 PM and more information will be provided.
- All parents have been contacted on their scholars' reading and math final exam performance. If you have questions on intervention opportunities for your scholar, please contact your scholar's teachers.
- Teachers have made arrangements for extended day learning opportunities in the mornings and after school and many scholars are not attending despite the lack of academic growth needed. Please be sure your scholar is attending these sessions and partner with us to get them where they need to be academically.
- An email was sent to all parents and scholars on 1/03/2023 that provided the recording of the digital town hall meeting as well as new practices beginning the first day of the spring semester. Please let me know if you did not receive this important email with the recording of the meeting and I will resend it to you.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we continue to prepare our scholars for their very best.

A Note from CHHS Athletics:
Dear Scholars and Parents:
We want to ensure all scholars have the opportunity to take part in all events across the district. To ensure scholars are admitted into all athletic events at Cedar Hill High School, all scholars must present a non-torn digital ticket and their current school ID at the student gate. Additionally, all elementary and middle school scholars must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian throughout the entirety of the game. These scholars will enter through the general admission gate. All scholars are welcome to attend and we hope they come to support all of our Longhorn scholar athletes!
