Safety at Crosswalks and traffic
We would like to remind all families of designated safe crossing locations. We became aware that some students were crossing Stonefield at Strathmill. This is a very dangerous location to cross as it is not marked and has significant amounts of traffic. All crossing needs to take place at Paisley and Stonefield. This will greatly assist with safety for students as well as facilitate traffic flow.
Additionally, we would like to remind families that when pulling into the drive from Lebanaon traffic should remain in a single line. Do not pass cars by moving into the lane of oncoming traffic. Last but not least please monitor your speed and ensure that you are alert. This includes keeping our school zone a cell phone free area.
We partner regularly with The Colony Police Department to have increased patrols during drop off and pick up times so that we can ensure the safety of every learner.
Thank you for speaking to your children about crossing areas and for your assistance while dropping off/picking up your child.

Spotlight on LEarning
Looking at things from the right angle! It's all about perspective!
This week Mrs. Ince's fourth grade students started to identify the types of triangles: right, acute, and obtuse. Fourth graders made triangles with straws and discovered that there is a relationship between the type of triangle and the length of the sides and size of the angles.
Building upon those math concepts in middle school, Mrs. Phillips' engineering students designed and built wooden gliders and used the angles of the wings and wind power and/or launcher, and recorded fly time. Students got to keep their creations and sign their planes to take home!

PepsiCo and 21st Century Fox, in partnership with the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), announces "The Search for Hidden Figures" – a new scholarship contest designed to help uncover the next generation of female leaders in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
This contest will support today's emerging STEM visionaries by awarding over $200,000 in scholarships and other prizes to over 20 winners.
The program is inspired by the highly-anticipated feature film "Hidden Figures", in theaters nationwide on January 6, 2017, produced by Pharrell Williams, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons. The film tells the 'untold' story of three African American female NASA mathematicians during the Space Race of the 1960's.

Prestwick 6th Grade Lottery
Little Elm ISD will give parents two opportunities in January to attend a Mandatory Parent Meeting for the Prestwick Sixth Grade Lottery for the 2017-2018 school year.
Parents of current fifth grade students, who do not reside in the Prestwick school zone and are interested in applying for the upcoming lottery for sixth grade, must attend a parent meeting to have priority in the lottery draw. The lottery will only be open to current residents of Little Elm ISD and District employees.
Please note that ALL current Prestwick 5th graders will roll up to 6th grade and are NOT required to attend these meetings. For questions give our office a call at 972-947-9450
