Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 20, 2018
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Earth Day was a fabulous celebration with many exciting and hands-on activities. Our students worked hard to beautify our school with fresh mulch, classroom doors were decorated with recyclable materials, new tiles were installed in the courtyard, beans were planted, and a reptile assembly were just some of the fun learning experiences that students enjoyed today. Many thanks to our guest visitors, Mr. Keith Jones, retired principal, Summit Hall Elementary School and Mrs. M & M, retired art teacher, Cedar Grove. Also, a huge thank you to our planning committee and staff for all their efforts in planning and leading this wonderful day, as well as to the PTA for providing a great assembly for all students.
A special thank you to Connor and Mrs. Coakley who went above and beyond and gave up part of their Saturday morning last weekend to accept a $400.00 grant from thePiedmont Foundation on behalf of the 4th grade. Students will be designing and painting storm drain art to help spread the word about the connection between our streets and our streams.
If you are a parent of a second grade student, our school is in the process of gathering information about students to plan for the upcoming school year. This includes the screening for gifted and talented programming. School staff wants to consider information you provide. Several weeks ago, a mailer with a Parent Input form was sent home to every second grade student. Many of our families of second graders have completed this form and returned it to the school; however, we are still missing some from several of our families. The deadline for submitting the parent input form is Friday, April 27th. If you have not sent one in yet, please take the time to complete it and send it in with your child to school by Friday.
As a reminder, PARCC testing begins for third grade students this Monday. Please make sure your child arrives to school on time, is well-rested, and has had a healthy breakfast. Testing will begin first thing in the morning. Thank you.
Last but not least, we have one more Friday this month to wear blue in recognition of Autism Awareness Month. Please consider wearing blue in support of children with autism.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Read to Ride
Cedar Grove students have the opportunity to win a bicycle for reading! In order to participate, students need to read two hours at home each week during April 22-June 2. Here's how it works:
- Students write the time you read on the calendar.
- At the end of the week, total the time you read.
- If you read 2 or more hours, have your parent sign the box for that week.
- On Monday each week, show your signed calendar to your teacher.
- Your teacher will give you a ticket to put in the Read to Ride container in the front hallway.
- You can earn a ticket for each week you read 2 hours. You can earn up to 6 tickets!
On June 5th, two student tickets will be pulled from the Read to Ride container. An age appropriate bicycle will be purchased for each student. Each student will also receive a new helmet.
Cedar Grove Elementary would like to thank Klinger Insurance Group for providing the two bicycles.

Operation Safe Ride to School Initiative
Throughout the year, Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officers, in addition to their daily patrols educating the public on traffic laws and enforcing those laws, conduct focused traffic-safety initiatives. In April, which is recognized as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Police Department is conducting enforcement that focuses on the illegal use of cell phones while driving. In May, the Police Department will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Click It or Ticket Campaign, which is intended to increase the awareness of using seat belts and child safety seats and using them properly.
The MCPD – Operation Safe Ride To School initiative is both an educational and enforcement campaign that focuses on distracted driving, and seat belt and child safety seat use around Montgomery County public school entrances and drop-off lanes during the morning arrival of students. It began this month (April) and will continue in May. The Department has received numerous complaints and concerns that drivers are talking on cell phones during school drop-off and are not properly securing children in car seats or not using safety seats. The Department recognizes that the arrival of children at school is often a very active time of heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic and safety during this time is a priority.
This month, Traffic Division officers will begin the enforcement component of this initiative and will enforce the illegal use of cell phones by drivers and seat belt and safety seat violations around public schools during the morning arrival of students. The Department’s goal with this initiative is to work to maximize everyone’s safety during the arrival at school.
